The production company averages slightly less than 50% of the box office over the time a film is in release, even less in the foreign market. The rest goes to the theaters and distribution companies.

Rule of thumb for profitability for movies is to have twice the box office in the domestic market than the cost of the production of the film.

I’m not so sure that is the case any more, because they have been putting a lot of effort into finding out how to generate optimal nets. They are nothing if not profit oriented, and not beyond “profits for me, but not for thee”, if they can get away with it.
