8 stars whose box-office draw is nosediving
NY Post ^ | 06.14.2014

With an opening weekend take of $28 million, Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow” — which debuted June 6 — did even worse than his last sci-fi movie, 2013’s “Oblivion.” In the last eight years, Cruise has had only one hit (2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol”). It looks like he’s nearing the end of his run as a major movie star, though we’ll see how “Mission: Impossible 5” does when it comes out next year.

“Not surprising when they appear in the majority of movies that are made. Over exposure in my opinion. And let’s face it, the stars today, both male and female, can’t hold a candle to the stars of days gone by.”

Can anyone picture Clooney as Chisolm?

He pretty good in Intolarble Cruelty. Similar fast talking character in OH Brother.

Clooney has done a couple films where he didn’t play George Clooney. I thought he was hilarious in “Brother, Where Art a Thou.” The problem is he doesn’t do enough roles like that.

I thought he was also good in The Perfect Storm.

The best acting in the Ocean’s movies was by Andy Garcia.

Andy Garcia……yum…..But then again I could spend two hours watching Andy Garcia do nothing but read the obituaries.

Liked Crowe in Gladiator and in Master And Commander, Far Side Of The World.

Same here. Master And Commander was the only movie I’ve ever went to the theater to see all by myself as I couldn’t find anyone who wanted to see it with me.

You'd probably like When A Man Loves A Woman. Good movie with a good story. Garcia plays a devoted husband and pulls it off flawlessly.

Unlike so many of the pretty boys in Hollywierd, Andy IS a good actor. And from some interviews I've seen, I think he's probably a very nice person too.

Saw Edge of a Tomorrow. Thought it was great. Cruise gets a bad wrap because he’s a weirdo off screen. Most of his movies are good.

I like Mark Walberg. He is the Anti-Damon.

There don’t appear to be any triple threats anymore. If I want a quirky actor, give me Chriistopher Walken. Cruise’s best role? Tropic Thunder. Is Clooney a great actor? Can see both Crowe and Gibson in Oceans, but can Clooney play William Wallace?

All of these actors are one-dimensional and keep playing the same roles over, and over, and over, and over. It gets really boring.

My favorite Clooney film (as much as I detest and hate his politics) was oddly quirky “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” loosely based on Homer’s “Odyssey” (which I never read). “Up In The Air” was pretty good, too.

“Liked Crowe in Gladiator and in Master And Commander, Far Side Of The World.”

Ditto for those, but I really think LA Confidential was his finest.

Depp was enjoyable in "Ed Wood" as the director of unintentionally campy "Plan 9 From Outer Space." As an extra bonus, you got to watch Lisa Marie dancing in the music video -- one of the sexiest dances ever and accompanied by some really spacey theremin music. You do have to ignore horserace Sarah Jessica Parker who is just clumsy and unsexy compared to expert dancer and athletic Lisa Marie.

Amateurs at the NY Post writing about the movie business.

Hollywood Math 101: To be a movie star, you have to earn more than you lose at the box office.

The only actors on this list who are movie stars are Tom Cruise, Adam Sandler, and Vince Vaughan.

If you want to lose money, put Johnny Depp in a film without pirates. It will tank. Put Matt Damon in anything where he isn’t Jason Bourne. It will tank. Put George Clooney in anything. It will tank.

The article acknowledges the failure of most of these actors to earn out at the box office... and yet insists on calling them “stars whose careers are faltering.” Um, no. Tom Cruise is a star who’s having a rough time at the box office this week. The rest of these guys are failed leading men with good publicists who keep getting cast.

“Movie star” is thrown around too loosely these days.

The problem with Master and Commander, and turning any of that literary series into a movie, is that the book was so good. Very challenging work. I like the movie, but I had read the whole series first. Really awesome writing.

Clooney and Damon are seen as hard-line leftists and movie-goers can't get beyond that. Cruise is an insane Scientologist. Depp is a utter fruitcake and stoner. I won't see any of their movies. Farrell is a post-modern prettyboy and boring. Crowe is burnt out. "Les Miserables" may have killed his career. He sucked beyond description.

Sandler is still funny and I loved both "Grown Ups" movies. Crude, but very funny. Vaughan was very funny in "Delivery Man" although "The Internship" sucked. He's on the bubble.

Where is Leonardo DiCaprio on this list? "The Wolf of Wall Street" did OK, but "The Great Gatsby" was one of the biggest flops in recent memory. How about celluloid eye acid like "Django Unchained" and "Shutter Island"? Real stinkers.

Where is Brad Pitt? He's so busy caring for his insane wife's multiple kids that he's essentially out of the business. However, anything he's done within memory has sucked ("World War Z", "The Counselor").

And where is Jim Carrey? America has clearly said, "Get this washed-up psycho away from me!" Remember "Mr. Popper's Penguins" and "Kick-Ass 2"? Neither does anyone else. He's done.
