Centenarians have found a way to beat the common diseases of old age, such as cancer and heart disease, research suggests.
The study by King's College London found they were more likely to die of infections such as pneumonia, unlike younger groups of elderly people.
Researchers said 28% of 100- to 115-year-olds died of "old age" and a fifth of pneumonia.
Cancer claimed the lives of fewer than 5% and heart disease fewer than 9%.
The study was based on an analysis of 36,000 death certificates.
By comparison, these diseases were the most common reasons for death among the 80- to 84-year-old age group, with cancer responsible for 25% of deaths and heart disease nearly a fifth.
Lead researcher Dr Catherine Evans said the findings raised important questions for health and care services.
"Centenarians have outlived death from chronic illness, but they are a group living with increasing frailty and vulnerability to pneumonia and other poor health outcomes.
"We need to plan for healthcare services that meet the 'hidden needs' of this group, who may decline rapidly if they succumb to an infection or pneumonia...
...According to latest Office for National Statistics data, there are more than 13,000 centenarians living in the UK, but by 2066 that number is expected to increase to more than 500,000...

Try being a caretaker to someone who is going to live to over 115. If you don’t think it’s a problem, just google “Caretaker children abuse,” lol.
So if you’re still alive at 100, you haven’t died of cancer or heart disease. Or anything else. Yet. Good to know.
I’m only making it to April 6, 2058. I’ll be 91.
At that age, sometimes “you” may have cancer, but they don’t operate because it won’t prolong your life and the surgery/treatments can be more harmful than good.
I think Milton Berle had cancer late in life.
;)
I’m just glad that our Senators don’t live to be 100!
I’ve heard recently that the new stance on prostate cancer in older persons is to just leave it alone...they’ll go before the cancer has a chance to kill them.
More than one nonagenarian that I have seen has had the organ that failed first be the brain.
I have decided I never want to outlive my brain.
That's 'conservative treatment', beloved by single-payer health care systems worldwide.
I have decided I never want to outlive my brain.”
Neither do I but a whole lot of liberals obviously have and will continue to do so and they aren’t even 30 yet.
At 79 I had open heart surgery, got a new aortic valve and then 45 radiation treatments for prostate cancer. My grand daughter says I am good to go for the 100. I’m 83 and if the bank account holds out ,I might just go for it. lol
Hey, thanks for the pic, I just finished carving a centaur for a local doctor, all that remains is the sanding and painting. I like the action of the horse body, it’d make a good start for another carving
One of our lecturers made an interesting claim once. It was along the lines that even cancer slows down as you get older. I got no cite to give you, it were an off the cuff remark during a lecture on tumor growth patterns, but never forgot it.
I think that was Mickey Mantle’s lament.
“Try being a caretaker to someone who is going to live to over 115.”
I’m 81 and could be one of the caretakers.
A very frightening thought. :-)
.
Drink a lot of red wine and stay far away from doctors and hospitals. :-)
Well, depenzz,(and I hope that’s not a fashion statement)...
At 83, active on web forums, using terms like lol... I can hope for as much. Good on ya!
No its not a fashion statement , lol and I prolly text as much as my grand kids (after all, they taught me ). Gotta brag just a little here, I look at least 20 years younger than I am. Oh yeah, I drove school bus for the last 12 years and would be yet but my daughter talked me into giving it up, going to look for another job in about a month though.
