The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Thanks! They look very healthy.
Thanks. I’ll give that a try.
I stop by a nursery on TX 95 in Elgin and bought some lettuce and turnip seed. $.50 for a 1/4 cup of turnips and $.75 for a 1/4 cup of black seed lettuce.
I used to like the TV show ‘Victory Garden’ when Roger Swain hosted. Now, not so much.
Good going. My oldest daughter and I used to take some of the garden tours in Farmington and Ste. Gen when she lived here. Also some nature walks down in Cape Girardeau.
Watched it every Saturday morning - loved it. Part of that show was Marian Morash cooking in the kitchen - yum! I bought the Victory Garden Cookbook because of those segments. I mostly watched with Swaim. Eventually Weishan started doing it. He wasn’t bad, but the show was never the same. I pretty much quit watching when Drurie took over, even if I did like his accent.
I picked some cucumbers and that one hot pepper to take with me. I also covered with netting the pepper plants that are now growing peppers.
Have a chance of thunderstorms today/tonight and a better chance Saturday and Sunday. Next week looks like a drying out period. My plants are soaked with water now. They will be okay for all next week and then some.
As I said on last week's thread, I haven't been out of my town for over a year and a half, so I'm wondering what the world looks like past my city limits. Maybe I'll pass through an area where the US President isn't Obama. If I find that, I'll pitch a tent and stay there. I'm also wondering if the American Indians have stopped attacking travelers. I'll check out the newest log cabins while on the trail (I said it's been a really long time since I left here).
I'll have my computer with me so I'll check in on the gardening thread to keep up.
Have a fun and safe vacation and hope those squirrels stay away.
That could be a deficiency in calcium. Add some calcium to the soil. They also make a spray for tomato plants which you can get a home depot or lowes maybe even Walmart. Most of the seed catalogs have them too.
I save egg shells, crushed and sometimes pulverized in the blender. Also some banana peels. I add this stuff to the areas where I am going to plant tomatoes and melons.
Tomatoes and melons need potassium and phosphorus especially during the flowering and setting fruit stages, so I often side dress with a 15-30-15 slow release fertilizer when they begin to flower.
Thanks so much for the pictures. I love those containers you have there. Wish I had some like those on my back patio. Maybe one day, I can get hubby to make some.
Hi all, everything is growing well here finally. Have most of the garden planted, tomatoes, peppers, cukes, broccoli, radishes (fingers crossed as usual), herbs, beans, asparagus still coming in, have carrots, beets, chard left to plant and then I will probably be out of room. In our woods the mayapples are plentiful this year and it could be a good crop if I can beat the raccoons to them. It’s on my bucket list to try mayapple jelly. I even found a dozen wide mouth pint canning jars brand new with the lids and rings at a garage sale for 3.00 so it must be meant to be this year. Fingers crossed on the radishes because most years they bolt and I don’t get any or just a few. I have tried most every variety I can find.
My husband is growing those too. He thinks he’ll harvest some of the seeds and sell them, :). I hope he doesn’t try to charge what he paid for them.
You’re welcome. My brother in law made one similar to the large black one, except that his was bigger. It was very nice. He’s an avid gardener, too.
Thanks for the pictures. I love my indoor garden window, except it just isn’t large enough. I’d like to add a “green” room on the other side of my patio door, so I would have enough space to really grow some serious amounts of food during the winter.
Lemon Balm was new to me when I saw it at the garden center. Plant it around seating areas in the yard and it will discourage mosquitoes. As a tea it has a lemon flavor and is good for stomach problems.
Best of all, once it is established it is almost indestructible, it comes back evey year.
That’s good to hear that you didn’t have to be there too long. The clinic we have closest to us is in Farmington, but the local Veterans tell me that they just go there in order to get their meds, and see the private practice docs for everything else.
I have no experience with the St. Louis VA. My Dad lived in Southwest Mo. and he always went to the KC VA. He would catch an OATS van up there, and be there all day waiting for them to get him in. He had lots of health issues, had already had heart attack and strokes. Traveling 3 hours up and three hours back wasn’t great for a guy in his shape. He did like his VA doc a lot, but he relied on Medicare for the bulk of his treatment and got his meds through the VA.
There was always a concern that he would miss his ride home, and he would remind them now and again. Once they actually did drag it out so long that he missed the van. They wound up sending him home in a taxi.
Well, I won’t editorialize and tell you what I thought; I’ll just let the facts speak.
I wish you could send a couple of days of rain our way, and dry out a little to plant the rest of your stuff.LOL
I have a recipe for your visitor. ;)
Your raised beds look good.

I have a link to some “ollas” (clay vase-looking things) if that doesn’t work out. I’ve seen the deal about using soda bottles.
It’s so hot here (I mean REALLY hot), I don’t know how well it would do. We might need to rig up some kind of drip system. We’re all going, but it would be back & forth for me, during the week & some weekends. I’d love to be that close to Crystal Beach (seaweed is wait high right now  )
It’s going to be wild. if it happens. We have a week & 10 zillion things on our plate to begin with.
grrr just found out the garden is full of fire ants (downside of rain) lol Wonder if it could take my roots & the beans with me. I want those turnips & beets!
