The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

When we moved into our current house, there was catnip all over the back yard. Yesterday I tried to find some and it had been replaced by a different flavor mint. Kitty says the new one is ok, but she doesn’t go crazy over it like she used to with the catnip. I’m debating throwing some catnip seeds out there for a new crop.
On the subject, if anyone saves catnip seeds, make sure they’re locked away while they dry. My cat threw 2 trays of assorted seeds on the floor trying to roll in the catnip seed!
You’ve got on heck of an operation going there. Now, just wait until those cute little plants start taking off on you. It’ll be a jungle ;)
I had to spray my grapes today. A bunch of caterpillars ate every leaf off of a 12ft tall vine.

Hey, most of them were free at Mom & Pop Nursery, aka, Planthaus2 because the markers identifying the variety were missing.
We are getting RAIN right now, real rain..well, thunderstorm rain, not the anemic mist we've gotten for what seems like forever. I bet my rain barrel is already full. I ran out and covered all the plants because north of here they got hail along with the rain.
I looked again. No, it was a strawberry plant with no strawberries,,I hadn't noticed the leaves in threes..It's good to be old, and blind.
Today when I was hauling brush piles, I kept thinking, "I wonder when I'm going to go to pick up a stick, and instead it's a snake?"
Looking great! Hard to believe this is only your second season of gardening.
We got a few sprinkles here yesterday afternoon.
Enough to chase me in from cutting grass, but not enough to do any good.
I’ll need to spend some time watering after work today.
Also need to make another trip to the neighbor lady’s stable.
I still have a dozen or so orchard trees that need to be mulched.

I started late last year, maybe it was March/April and that was screwing up and learning.
I had a bowl of strawberries this morning from the garden. They didn’t come from California with people handling them, hadn’t been sprayed with anything, weren’t put in a truck and taken to a grocery store where they sat. I picked them off the plant, washed them, and ate them with a bit of milk and bit of sugar. Since they are fresh, the strawberry taste is intense.
Johnny, I checked every tobacco plant and no animal of any kind is on them. I did spray them and some others with Neem oil just to make myself feel better about protecting the plants.
In the pictures, you will notice I still have the small greenhouse leaned against the wall where I put it after it fell forward due to wind or animal making it fall forward. I don’t need it right now so think I will leave it where it is rather than standing it up again.

Hmm, just put TV on weather channel to see radar when it comes on for here. If that is coming here, I surely don’t want hail. I’d have to cover everything.
As long as there aren’t any bugs.

Just ate some asparagus fresh from the garden. Seasoned it with thyme and a walking onion. This is where the pay-off starts for all the hard work.

I envy the asparagus. You are a master grower for sure. Glad you have the walking onions. I haven’t tasted one - where do you rate them on an onion tasting scale? When I read about them, if they are young they are sweeter; if older, they are hotter. What do you think?
They were oniony, and a perfect complement to the asparagus.
I didn’t do much analysis beyond that. ;)

Don’t those strawberries just taste better than anything you ever bought from the store? Once I tasted my own homegrown food, I decided I don’t ever want to go back to store bought.LOL
Store bought strawberries are huge, perfectly formed, and tasteless. Mine are large and full of flavor and a few are not perfectly formed. Guess those would be thrown out in the perfectly formed grocery store ones.
I just put the tubes in a short wide pot to keep them standing up. Unfortunately, I had trouble getting the seed to germinate that year, so didn’t really have a great test of the concept.
I found the quickest way a few years back. I just cook the corn husk and all in the Microwave, let it sit for a bit, and then cut off the stem end.
Grab hold of the husks and silks and shake, so that gravity pulls the corn out. The silks come right off. No need to husk and remove silks before hand. Once cooked the silks come off quicker and easier.
I’m gonna have to find out how much time in the Microwave, since I have forgotten that.
Rightly, did you have to rain on the parade? LOL Lots of critters come from moths and other flying stuff. So if a bee can land on it, so can the less desirable flyers that like to leave eggs behind. I hope you are correct Marcella, but time will tell.

My garden looks lovely and so does my lawn.
I think I might never put my glasses back on.
