The woman took off her jacket during the attack and used it to try to shield herself against the coyote. She then ran to a neighbor's home for refuge.
The coyote ran into a backyard, where it was shot and killed by an Orangetown police officer, authorities say.
The woman told police the coyote appeared to be more focused on attacking her, not her dog

I started to unzip my daypack to grab my camera and then they retreated. You would have done better to have unzipped your daypack and grabbed your 9mm pistol. But I guess that depends on what state you live in. Here in the People's Republic of Maryland ... I can't conceal carry a nerf gun.

Saw a coyote on a walking trail here in a suburb of Dallas. Saw a bobcat as well last October. There is a park that extends for miles so wildlife has encroached on it.

The one sure way to get rid of the coyotes is to introduce wild tigers into the area. You turn six or seven thousand wild tigers loose in New York City and I’d come back for another visit.

I see them all the time at the golf course up the street. They just lay about the side of the fairway resting.....remarkable.

Early one Sunday morning the local PD brought me a carcass of a coyote that they had shot in front of the Courthouse, downtown. The loner had been subsisting upon housecats in the downtown area for no telling how long and weighed upwards to 75#, was in good flesh and his coat was slick. The PD thought him to be a wolf but he was all coyote. Fed well, coyotes can grow to be around 75#.

The coyote-wolf blend in peculiar to the NY/PA area. It seems only certain of each species can cross breed.

Surprised to see coyotes in NY I cannot recall the source but I read once that there is no county in the United States that does not have coyotes in it. There was a citation of some spotted in downtown Chicago.
Although I have not seen them where I live, I know they're there since I've heard them and I've found coyote scat on my property (rural central Virginia).

They are NOT “coyotes”. They are grey wolf/coyote crosses from Canada and they are in most of the east now.
Bigger and more aggressive than coyotes and hunt in packs. Killed a female singer who was hiking in Nova Scotia a few years ago.
My guess is rabies,

I carry a Kimber .45 here but that early morning bike ride was going to a school and...even here in Alabama they have us kowtowing to GFZs.

Too many people moved into the coyotes’ territory in NY. Animal protection laws and open space laws are needed there immediately!
;-)
[Well, they’ve moved to the West and done the same to us.]

Coyote fur makes a good parka hood fringe, BTW. With a wire sewn in under the hem of the hood, the fringe can be shaped to help prevent snow blindness.
