Explanation: What surrounds a hotbed of star formation? In the case of the Orion Nebula -- dust. The entire Orion field, located about 1600 light years away, is inundated with intricate and picturesque filaments of dust. Opaque to visible light, dust is created in the outer atmosphere of massive cool stars and expelled by a strong outer wind of particles. The Trapezium and other forming star clusters are embedded in the nebula. The intricate filaments of dust surrounding M42 and M43 appear gray in the above image, while central glowing gas is highlighted in brown and blue. Over the next few million years much of Orion's dust will be slowly destroyed by the very stars now being formed, or dispersed into the Galaxy.

thaqt is MUCH nicer than Jackson Pollack! :-)
My favorite star is Betelgeuse.
:’) Mine’s the Sun.
Jackson Pollack? You mean Jack the Dripper?
Ha Ha ha!
Yeah...that guy. :-)
That amazingingly beautiful.
Thanks so much, Sunken Civ.
Thank you for the post and ping, Mr. Civilizations.
That is a really lovely image, but it looks like mass destruction, beautiful as it is.
Whenever I see something that’s light left it 1600 years ago, I wonder what it looks like right now, and I’ll never know.
Same here. :’)
If the human race last that long and the ongoing pictures survive, somebody's going to have a heck of a time lapse movie to watch.
One big attraction to FTL travel would be to “time travel” into “the future” — it would enable a time lapse video to be made well in excess of real time. Frame one from here, frame two from one light year, frame three from two light years, etc, until the gap is nearly closed. :’)
:’)
Our lives are like brief candles compared to the light years it takes for these images to reach Earth.
Now would be a good time to start the recordings of these images for that time-lapse movie in the far future.
In the meantime, it’s 24° and snowing lightly. It has backed off quite a bit from the seeming blizzard earlier.
:-) We have one great mind between us, yours.
Heh...
Almost had to put on a long sleeve shirt today, didn't get above 64F :)
Don't know about the FTL thing, my little mind thinks time and distance are wrapped tight around each other (one can't exist without the other).
If you go back in time, you would have to go back in distance or a negative distance.
Dang hard to plot a negative distance :)
Yes, it was a blistering 34° earlier today, but when it started to snow, the temp went down 10°F.
Space has no up, down, left, right, forward, or back, so maybe time doesn’t either. :’)
Just don’t say that 3 times in a row...
