The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

That growing cart is expensive. Looking at laundry carts as a substitute is a good idea.
I just planted 34 onion bulbs. I planted them like Applegate said, with the tops showing a bit. According to Applegate and another source, but I trust Applegate more than the other source, planting them with the top showing makes big onions and planting one to two inches deep makes small onions.
I have very small onion bulbs left - can I peel them and cook them a bit with a little butter, and eat?
As long as they haven’t been treated, yes you can eat them.

I couldn’t get my pond to hold water with bentonite. I used over 100lbs for a 12 x 20 pound, and all the bentonite sloughed off of the sides and collected on the bottom. That was with tilling it in also.

Applegate, deal with it. I have the same responsibility when I write articles about prepping - I do my best to search out the best way to do something because I know others will believe what I write and in most cases, that means they are going to spend money.
sockmonkey, I got more plant tags at Walmart gardening center and a resin or plastic or whatever it is, large decorative pot for the orange tree and low and behold, I got exactly the right size for the black pot the tree is in. It fits in the bottom of the new pot and the top of the black pot lines up to the decorative pot. That was a miracle. I'll have the engineer drill a hole in the decorative pot so water won't stand in there when it drains from the black pot.
I had to go to Kroger and thought to get two tickets to the Mega Millions drawing tonight. I'm sure I will win and then buy a FARM and hire Johnny to run it. That would be a blast.

I haven’t been out in a while in my truck. I am still driving on a fill-up that my wife bought for me a week or two before Christmas. Aint no arab getting richer on my dime!
I hate going to Walmart, too, but for the item I ordered, I didn’t want to pay the postage. When I order from them on line, I go to a place in the store and get my item and leave the store. Today was really bad with so many cars there. If I hadn’t had to pick up that item, I would have gone to Lowes to get the plant signs and not gone to Walmart.
Had a hard time finding a parking place at Kroger, too. Cars were everywhere today. I also filled up my car at the Kroger station. I stuck with it until I got what I set out to get today, and finally got home - safely.
Car was about half full and I like to fill it up at that point. I drive so little, a tank of gas lasts a long time.
If you don’t have a handicap placard, you should. You are in great shape for your age, but you struggle with some back pain and hips too, I think. If you go to Wally early, you can get a parking spot with the placard, but they only have one checkout open early morning.
I try to order stuff that will ship to the house for free. I ordered a ShopVac from Lowes.com and it shipped free to the house. It was 28lbs and came by UPS. I had my choice of picking it up at the store or shipping to the house. Duh... Oh yea, it was a $100 vacuum for $50. Win/win.
I was happy happy to see it yesterday. I am going to use the old one for attaching to power tools to keep down the mess when cutting wood. It has a HEPA filter on it, so it traps 99.97% of .3 micron size particles and larger. The new one car stay clean enough to clean cars or pick up water spills.
I occasionally make one when I am in a restaurant. Rye bread is sometimes get a hankering for, but not often, so we rarely have it on hand. Same for Swiss Cheese.
I substituted flax seed bread, and super sharp cheddar today and used some coleslaw instead of kraut.LOL

I have a permanent handicap placard due to my knees - my other parts work. The right knee had an operation several years ago and that was marvelous but both knees have little cartilage cushion left between the bones.

I try to get free shipping on everything but couldn’t on this purchase from Walmart unless I bought a whole bunch of other stuff which I didn’t want to do.
I have never liked to shop but I had to get certain items today. The quilts I got from that tool place are plenty heavy to keep plants alive.
My plant date for lettuce, spinach, and potatoes starts April 1. However, I am going to plant one bag now (as soon as I can get a bag of MR compost, and put a row cover over it, if the temps get too low.
We were in the 70s for the last 2 days. Worst case, I can drag the bag indoors, or hook up a 100 watt bulb, but I doubt that I'll need anything more than a row cover. Your plant dates are normally earlier than ours.
I turned under the rye/vetch cover crop for the potato bed today. It needs 3 or 4 weeks after turning before I plant the potatoes.
I still have some Jiffy Mix leftover to use up, but I'll eventually get some of that Espoma. I don't need much, since I don't really do much in the way of starting seeds.
I have some pvc pipe that I criss cross by putting each end of 2 pipes in the corners of the 3x8 beds. This keeps any plastic about 18 to 24 inches above the ground. I can hang the light from the center where they cross.
We always have rolls of plastic covering around for Hubby’s concrete flatwork.

I use milk jugs. Just cut a bunch of strips from the jugs a little wider than a popsycle stick, and taller, wider at the top. Trim one end to a point, and write with permanent marker on the top part of the plastic.
I have also saved popsycle sticks and used those for the plants I grow in pots.
We keep various dark breads around at different times, I am going to buy a corned beef kit tomorrow, so you can figure the Rye bread will be on board. I aint much for sour kraut, but if we cook sliced or shredded cabbage in the juice of the corned beef, I will use it on the reubens.
My wife is a cheese head, there’s no telling what kind we may have on hand, baby swiss is common, gouda, havardi, colby jack, cheddar, American.
I gotta go to the lung dr tomorrow. Oh boy, at least I get a day wife my wife. :)

I really don’t like this one too much, but I am gunna give him a fair chance and humor my GP doc, then tell GP I want another opinion. I would like to send my records back to my hometown dr and let him look them over and advise.

It was in the low eighties yesterday, and it's a cold 45 now, with a booger of a North Wind.
