This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

We had misting today all day. Supposed to turn to snow in a couple of hours from now. Yesterday I uncovered the outdoor winter garden, and at sundown today I covered it up to prepare for the snow.

I haven’t heard anything official, but I know this has been the worst winter for at least 10 years.

I am sure it would be fine. Mine gets really hot during the summer, and survives ok. I put in one a dolly, so that if I ever need to move it in on the patio, I can.

I am still hacking and coughing up clear phlegm. yuck. Taking some expectorant that I keep on hand, and drinking plenty of fluids. Much better, but not 100%. At least I got the dishes caught up.

Tommorrow I’ll be washing rugs and mopping the kitchen, and if I have any energy left, cleaning out the refrigerator. Youngest daughter has joined a co-op, and she gives me the produce that she doesn’t want or if she has too much to use.

Last week she got so many carrots, that I filled up a huge space in the frig. Now I need to either process to freeze, can, or dehydrate. A couple of nights ago I made an apple pie, and still had about 9 apples left.

She gave me some really great bell peppers. All different colors. I love stir fried peppers, onions, and carrots so I’ve been in hog heaven for those.LOL

:-) Glad it’s not just me. Wait! Are they? It’s pretty crummy here, but Monday is a definite possibility. Tuesday is supposed to be nice. I need to find out when Fanick’s gets their plants in.

Good that you won’t worry, so you can get a good night’s sleep.

Where do you get that Espoma Seed Starter?

I used Jiffy this year, for the fourth year and it worked fine. You do have to stay on top of the watering. I often have 100% germination. It is not my choice of soils, but I do not have any options locally.

We had a very light rain all night. So light, I could not hear it, but it was there. It was just what we needed here.

It’s 44, cloudy and windy today. I may procrastinate today! Planting anything may have to wait.

“Where do you get that Espoma Seed Starter?”

I ordered it from Sears. I got the 16 qt. size.

Item# 01297835000
Description: Espoma Organic Seed Starter Mix - 16 quart
Sold by: Sears
It’s also on Amazon. Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, doesn’t have it.

“I used Jiffy this year, for the fourth year and it worked fine. You do have to stay on top of the watering.”

I have tried Jiffy, watering from the top because I didn’t think of wetting it before I put the seeds in. Then, I started more seeds, wetting the Jiffy before I put the seeds in, and only one cup has anything in it and that one just started. With Espoma, the seeds I started at the same time as Jiffy, the seedlings are so thick now, I’ve got to transplant into larger pots with only that one bit up with the Jiffy.

I don’t have to prewet with the Espoma as the water is sucked up into the cup by the next day after I planted the seeds. The only way water gets into the cups using Jiffy, is to water them from the top.

This was the first time I wet the soil before planting. I usually water from the top since that is where the seeds are. After they get a root system going, I switch to bottom water to keep from wetting the leaves.

I am sorry you had such a bad experience. Starting from seeds can be a trying experience at first.

Yesterday was a real damp day. Light rain/heavy drizzle, but we've been without precipitation in the Hill Country for so long that we'll take anything we can get.

The Mrs and I decided to replenish some of our flock of chickens. We went to a local vendor for some chicks. We left with 8 bantam chicks, an adult female Muscovy, and 2 goslings.
I don't know why the Mrs wanted the bantams other than to provide some company for the bantam rooster that found it's way to our place,. We needed the female Muscovy since the male Muscovy we have has been trying to mate with the mallards and killed one. He is quite chunky and weighs in at 10lbs.

We weren't home for an hour with the new birds when the Mrs looks outside and exclaims, "What the Heck?". In front of the chicken run was one of the hens, with 14 hatchlings. How she managed to nest and hatch those chicks is a mystery. Any bird in my area that stays out at night is at extreme danger of predation by raccoon, possum, or skunk. We have all the little ones caged up for their own protection right now. So far, the household kittens have shown no interest. They don't want to face the wrath of an overprotective hen.

My idea is to have a tiny green house and heat it with a hundred watt bulb.

Here is what you're looking for:
