The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Has anyone here grown red carrots? I think I saw some as seed tape at Home Depot.

My daughter got this hand cranked spiral slicer thingy to make zoodles (zucchini noodles) It seems like you could use it for tromboodles. Or maybe sweet potatoodles. Maybe a handy prepper item to have around since it’s non electric.

One of the reviewers mentioned dehydrating the zoodles.
Anyway, she made it sound like it’s so much fun, I want one, too.

Okay, I woke up at 4 am, and just had to order the spiral slicer thingy for zoodles. I have no willpoewer. I think I can do stuff with it that I can’t do with my mandoline.

Before you know it (knock on wood), I will be eating mounds of tromboodles bolognese.

I ordered one from Ebay for $36 w/free shipping from someone that has sold 207 of them and 100% rating. I like free shipping, I almost never pay any shipping.

Was one for $33 w/free shipping, but seller had a 96 rating, thats several complaints.

Well, I done spent some money, I think I should go back to bed.

Most amazon orders 35 bucks or more ship free. I forgot to click free shipping..d'oh.

I've never cut myself on the mandoline. I know someone who cut the entire tip of their index finger off on one..yowsa, they now have a shortened trigger finger.

Like all bad kitties, I don't use that safety holder thing with my mandoline. I use the flat of my palm. I use it a lot for julienning stuff (the mandoline, not my palm).

I, too, am a kitchen gadget junkie. I have an electric mandoline, too, but like so many gadgets, it's a pain in the rear to clean all the parts after use.

I buy the clear plastic 9 oz. cups from Walmart for this purpose. Eighty of them for $2.50. I buy the clear ones so I can monitor the root growth of the seedling. I also bought a cheap basic soldering iron and use that to “punch” holes in the bottom. It literally takes a second for it to make a hole. Quick and easy!

The cups are a bit top-heavy when filled, so I put several of them in plastic shoe box-sized containers so I can move them around and water easily.

My kitchen gadget is an 8" chef's knife. It's amazing what you can do with one of those after thousands of hours wielding one in restaurant kitchens. ;)

My wife took off a quarter size chuck of skin just below the thumb on the palm of the right hand. It is still coming open a bit if she doesn’t baby the hand. Has to wear a glove when getting it into dishwater or bathing. I knew when I looked at the mandoline, it was an accident waiting to happen.

Between 3 surgeries and this accident in less than 6mo, she has ouchies all over.

Got an email today from my favorite nursery over in East Texas.

They have a flash sale going on Through Friday on “Native” fruit & nut trees at $5 per tree.

This is only the “Native” trees, but they have a great selection of other stuff.

I bought over 30 trees from them a couple of years back and was very happy with what I got and the prices.

Thought someone might have an interest here. Think I am going to place another order. This is the time of the year to be planting bare root trees.

I don't have a desire to spiral veggies. I have a Vidalia Chop Wizard (non electric) that is small (don't have a lot of storage room in small kitchen), was about $10, and it chops veggies into square small pieces. Put a not large piece of the veggie on top of cutter and push the lid closed and the veggie is chopped. I got this for cutting onions but can be used for anything. What I would like is a larger one of this type. I try to stay away from regular knives as I tend to end up cutting my hand when I cut veggies.

When I went last week to see the family who lost a family member, church women had brought food there and the one food that all put on their plate was a pasta salad. That had the spiral cut Fusilli and an Italian dressing and before long, that food was gone. There was a lot of that in a long wide throw away aluminum foil dish. I thought it was excellent. That is not difficult to make.

Anyway, I'm not spiral cutting veggies. The one on Amazon is $35+ with free shipping.

I will use it on potatos almost exclusively, my wife, no telling what she’ll noodle.

I dont know much about how Amazon does things because I haven’t bought anything there in years. I can usually match or beat their price by searching, plus find somebody that takes Paypal. Wife buys from Amerzon some.

Oops, sorry. I was mistaken on the size I use. I get the 16 oz. clear cups, not 9 oz.
