The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
I started my tobacco seeds yesterday in a pony pack, covered with plastic wrap and put it on my metal heating mat (aka computer tower). How long do they usually take to germinate?
I’ll definitely be using the ice cube trays!
Btw, today at Lowes, I scored an Improved Meyer lemon tree for $5.00. Yes, five dollars! It was at their 50-75% off section. The tree is about 3 feet tall and looks relatively healthy. A bit scrawny, missing 1/3 of its leaves (otherwise leaves look healthy), but for five bucks, what the heck? I’ll pot it up and hope for the best!
Wow, that’s an incredible score. My wife buys a lot of stuff from the reduced racks at Lowes.
Marcella— I look every time I go to Lowes for fruit trees and herbs. Lowes has the garden center all ready for shipments to arrive soon. I should be going tomorrow.

I won't make that mistake again. I really did take a pain pill and here I am. I still have to transplant the onions as they are stuffed in four cups - four kinds of onions. The potting soil mix is already in those pots so I'll put the pots on the dining table to get the onions in there. Have to put soil in one more pot for the celery. I'll get the onions and celery transplanted before the day is over.
I screwed up doing tomato seed right last year and ended up with spindly tomatoes that did nothing. That is not going to happen this year. The tomato plants, once I got them out of the paper cups, are strong and look great. I did bury a bit of their stem in the pots so they would grow more roots. In every case, those tomatoes were totally root bound in those cups - a mass of roots in every cup.
I so hope the ones I transplanted live through the transplanting. I tried to keep as much of the chosen ones roots as I could when separating them from the rest of the root ball.
Friends, if I haven't done this right and those tomato plants all die from the transplanting, I'm joining a nun convent.
Also, before eating or using any type citrus, zest it. Of course, don’t get the pith in it. Sprinkle the zest on a saucer and leave it out to dry naturally on the counter. That sure does save $ compared to store bought zest. It might turn darker than store bought because it isn’t chemical or whatever processed to keep it pretty. Store in a jar on your spice rack.

Thank you for doing this. I want the improved Meyer lemon and those herbs.
I have a stack of vinyl grow bags, I think they hold 3 gallons (have to check my order on Amazon to remind myself how much soil they hold and I may have two different sizes) and I’ll plant the tobacco seed in those. Would using those bags be okay? There is no way to know how many seeds I would plant since they look like dust. Do you have an opinion as to how many plants, if more than one, I could leave in the three gallon bag if a bunch come up?
Don't tell me to buy bags of fertilizer as using that in containers is not a good idea. The Jobe spike packages tell you how many to put in a container so you don't burn the plants to death plus the spikes gradually feed the roots of the plant and will last through a growing season.
Greeneyes and Johnny, I still have those two big regular potatoes with growth coming out of the eyes, in my pantry. I think it was greeneyes who told me when and how to plant those and I'll have to look where I keep info. like that. If I save info., I don't commit it to memory at that time.
Acid. Soak the zest in lemon juice for a few hours and then dry it, and it should stay pretty.

What makes you think they won't want you to grow, harvest, and can produce at the nun convent?
My Walmart had their Bonnie peppers, tomatoes, and other stuff out today, plus they were putting together the racks for a bunch more stuff. I think if it's supposed to snow here on Friday, it's too early to put out tomatoes and peppers.
I paid almost that much for a bag of Meyer lemons today at the store..You did good.
I happened across this youtube from last April of this guy who’s home was invaded by cops because the neighbors’ thought his vegetable grow lights were for growing illegal stuff. I haven’t watched his vids before this one. He rambles a lot but it’s a heads up on nosey neighbors and the not so Mayberry cops of today.

Maybe the convent will have an ample, sunny garden area with no squirrels and birds.

If I have killed these tomato plants in the transplanting, I don’t think they will let me near a veggie garden. :o)
Or not..

The onions are transplanted. I’ll do celery tomorrow and I really need to transplant two different cucumber plants so will do that tomorrow. Those are growing big fast.
I’m not sure about the celery. The plants are tiny but there are so many of them they are jammed in there. I guess the celery seed was so small, I couldn’t separate them. Should I just pull a bunch out of the cup and leave the rest in the cup to grow more? They are so small, I don’t think I can transplant them without tearing them up.
