Free Republic | Jan 10, 2014 | greeneyes

Posted on 01/10/2014 12:20:06 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

No herbs yet at Lowes. They have seeds and seed starting soil, plus have the garden center all ready for spring shipments.

“Can ya tell me what herbs in particular you are looking for? I know you want Rosemary.”

I know little about herbs. I have two kinds of basil under the grow lamp and they are up, but I don’t know what I need except I want ones that are difficult to grow from seed. If you tell me there are a number of kinds available, I’ll go look. I made a list based on other Freepers info. on herbs -I’ll have to look that up and print it to give me some guidance as to what to buy. I also have that book on herbs written by a research doctor at MD Anderson hospital in Houston, so I need to look in that book and make decisions.

Thanks for looking. Okay, I’ll go through the book and Freeper list and make a list so I’ll know what to look for when they do come in.

I will be going back since they have a fresh new shipment of grow bulbs. I was not sure how many I needed, so I passed until I can know for sure. At $14 each, I dont want to buy any extras, though they will refund on the returns.

I know you don't like Home Depot, but their bulbs were two dollars less than walmart's yesterday for the same thing/same brand.

I didn’t know Walmart had them. I rarely go there because ours is a parking nightmare, even at 7am.

I had to move my sun-shelf today. The rebel tobacco is getting tall enough that I added 8 inches of headroom to keep the whole thing in the southerly sun.

In the next week or so, I'm going to completely redo my kitchen office/south windows nursery. I need about 4 times the shelf area that I have now.

My big 8 ft folding table/desk is going to go away and become a potting table under the lean-to and the real computer desk (glass and chrome) is going to get moved into the office space.

I'll be putting up new shelves and making platforms to take advantage of these 4 wonderful windows that give me so much light.

Rightly and others on here are also building, moving objects, rearranging, etc.. This is my first time to see what happens on this thread from one growing season to another, but I expect this happens every year.

I have to get more potting soil mix soon as I don’t have enough. I’m also going to get food plant fertilizer stakes (I have some but not enough) to stick in the potting soil mix I used last time, after I get plants in the containers. Soil that had tomatoes in it gets used for other plants and other used plant soil gets moved into the tomato containers.

There is always something that needs to be done.

Thats true, but I have run up against an object that I cant move. Its pretty well seed starting time for me and all of a sudden I’m overwhelmed with stuff to do. At least the weather is sunny.

I may start my seeds without having my seed incubator(refer to my FR homepage) assembled yet. I hate to break my routine, but if I want to stay on schedule(for once) I need to do it.

Yep. It's annual.

I have two modes. Make plans and never act on them, or make plans and get stupid about doing them.

I've fallen to the second option. Apparently, it's now the next week or so.

Table moved out, real computer desk cleared of military memorabilia and move into the office area, everything is moved around and there is much more room.

I've got to scrounge materials to make the shelves, but I have temporary shelves up and have doubled the shelf space so far.

No time like the present, I guess. Catz HATE change. ;)

This also has the affect of making the house more human friendly for reasons I don't need to go into.

—BTW I wet the planting mix before placing the seeds and very lightly cover them with more mix—

The voice of experience. It never occurred to me to do it that way. Thank you.

Unless you plan to become a serious herbalist, most of what you want to grow will be for eating. The ones I would not want to be without for seasoning/flavor that do not come easily from seed:

**rosemary** (there are many types, but as far as I know, they all have much the same scent/flavor)
**spearmint** mints do not come true from seed. Chilled spearmint tea on a hot day is about the most refreshing thing you can imagine--you can make it from fresh leaves. Plant this in a container or in an area that it can take over, because it WILL take over.

Ever heard of an old Southern pastime called anvil tossing?

Amen.

I'm waiting to see if the catnip does the same.

I've been meaning to ask you all when I should start my seeds.

My particulars:

My garden is in 5 gal. Buckets and they are set on wooden carts.

The reason is if I leave them out at night the drunks and pillbillys will tear them up.

I am growing tomatoes, pole beans and cucumbers this year as well as habanero Peppers Jalapeno Peppers and Green peppers. Also some potatoes and garlic and I thinking about carrots and lettuce this year. The carrots and lettuce I am thinking about making long narrow garden boxes and attaching to the side of the carts so I can plant them in a row. My carts hold two 5 gallon buckets each.

Since I bring them in each evening frost should not be much of a concern.
