Posted on 01/10/2014 12:20:06 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Will do. Going there tomorrow morning.

I carry my hand cleaner everywhere and use it after touching anything. Sometime 4-5 times in a single store. I’m not a germ-a-holic, just careful in the sick season.

I’m not one to use restraint myself.

I am thinking of putting up a small greenhouse to grow peppers in since Sarajevo made his comment in post #105. Just looking for a reason to build one like yours, I guess.

Condolences on your loss. I loved our black lab, she was great unless she accidentally got loose from the fenced in part of the yard, or snuck out the front door behind you.

Then she would run all over the neighborhood bouncing like tigger, and totally play the catch me if you can game. The grand kids called her JoJo the bouncing dog.

We just had plenty of moisture, but unfortunately, it was delivered at freezing temperatures. Now that it has warmed up and most of the snow is melted, I am glad to report that the winter rye is green as a gourd. Don’t see a sign of winter wheat though, it just may never have come up since I planted it so late.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. We need to see those from the warmer areas. I haven’t ever grown eggplant, but someone else may have the answer to that issue. Could it be due to the low temperatures?

We have had a Chrismas Cactus for a long time, but I don’t remember how long.

My tuna cans are all 5 oz. I use them mainly to pour beer in and sink them into the dirt to catch/kill snails and slugs.

I usually don’t take stuff out of the containers per se. I just cut through one side and kinda tear off the bottom, and plop the plant into the ground at transplant time.

Good news for you. I am sure that these would be too hot for me, and certainly for my family as they can’t even take jalepeno heat.LOL

“Just looking for a reason to build one like yours, I guess.”

Build it - it will keep you out of pool halls and beer joints.

It’s important to keep harvesting the cukes in order for the plant to keep producing. It’s also easy to miss a cuke and all of a sudden have a giant one.

I like sweet pickle midgets, and hubby like the larger dills. That’s why I like homemade pickle brand, because you can pick them at all stages.

Also it’s important to process your pickles ASAP - course that is true of all produce.

I like the lemon cucumbers. They’re easier to see, especially on a trellis.

I am still on house lockdown, so when you next go to Lowes, if their herb plants are there, please let me know.

Just to report in, I did go to my local Lowes..No seeds, no bulbs, no herbs, They did have last year's patio displays 50% off..in case someone needs a pergola, gazebo, patio table or furniture that was set up in the store since last Spring.

Since you are in a warmer area than me, maybe your Lowe's has gotten some stuff in.

Ashamed to confess I bought a Christmas CD, and some lights that were 75% off..

I was thinking that old age and poor health would keep one out of beer joints, and pool halls, but realized that is far from true.

My Uncle used to ride his motorized wheelchair to Luckenbach. This involved driving it down Hwy 290 E near Fredericksburg. Sometimes the battery would die before he got to Luckenbach, and once he flipped it into a ditch. Sheesh.

I have saved toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls for the garden and other stuff. I especeially like to use them for helping to organize extension cords.

What you do is cut off a piece of the stem, making sure to have a joint or two. Pick off the lower leaves, and keep around 3 to 5 leaves at the top. Use some root powder as directed, and put the stem into a pot filled with rooting medium. Keep it moist but not drenched, and new roots will grow.

Vermiculite is wonderful stuff to add to your soil. It will help the soil to absorb more moisture to be released when your plants need it.

I keep a little hand cleaner in my purse, so I have it at all times. I use the wipes they have at Walmart to wipe off the cart, and I do clean my hands more than once during the cold and flu season, and again before I get into the car.

Today was a great day here. The sun was shining and we had temps up to 60F. I went out to clean off the patio, and pick up some stuff that had blown into the yard. Hubby stuck his head out the window, and said he was going to clean off all the patios come spring.

I shouted up and said why wait? It’s a great day and the the patio looks crappy from the road. So he even got busy and helped get it finished before dark.

Now I have a bunch of indoor stuff to do, since I blew it off in favor of outdoor work. Guess I should go get to it, and quit playing around on the computer.

I’ll bet that is true. I try to plant my cukes next to the fence, and use it instead of a trellis.

I only got cucumber seeds that are their best when small and their insides are proper to be crisp when canned. If I actually have cucumbers (and with me that is likely iffy since I have never grown “one” much less a bunch), I’m sure I will be sending you private Freepmail during the time I am canning them.

Paper rolls to use for organizing extension cords had never occurred to me. You have a wealth of “how tos” I don't have.

I just copied your info. on getting a cutting, BUT WHAT IS ROOT POWDER? I need to read that info. again, must have missed that part. I've been copying, pasting, and printing today, plus I wrote a paper explaining why all males and females act like they do - that took a little time.

About the cutting: After I do the cut and use the powder whatever that is (and how do you use it by the way), and put it in the medium, WHERE DO I PUT IT? Do I need to wait to do this until it is warm outside and then leave it outside? I don't have a sunny window in this townhouse.

I know I ask specific questions, but that way I don't screw up.
