From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Oh, those bigger animals are taking care of the squirrels. If I had a bear, I’d travel to Fort Worth and get Johnny and let him get rid of it and take the meat back with him. He’s probably got zillions of recipes for bear meat.

I have a very small greenhouse that cost me about $30.

I was at Big Lots today, and they were putting out their little instant greenhouses, and gardening stuff. They usually have some very easey peasey looking ones on the cheap.

That’s what mine is - really small but it allows me to get the seedlings outside without their being killed.

We haven’t had many hunters here this season. It’s sad.

I just did some checking on the H1N1 flu and deaths and here are reports from various news groups. Look at the states the CDC lists as some of you are in those states. I must not let my guard down and go out here.

“The Texas Department of Health is reporting that the flu is more virulent this year and East Texas as well as nationwide is seeing an increase in cases. Across the East Texas region, 28 counties have had lab tests confirmed Flu A and 17 of those counties confirmed the 2009 strain of H1N1. The number one thing people can do to prevent the flu is get vaccinated and, should you get the flu, symptoms are often less severe. Most cases of severe flu have been young to middle aged people who did not receive a flu vaccine.”

“Jennings Neel, 14, of Tatum, Texas, got the flu Dec. 27. The next day, she was treated at Good Samaritan Hospital in Marshall, TX and then airlifted to the ICU at Dallas Children’s Hospital. There, doctors diagnosed her with pneumonia and the H1N1 virus. According to her Caring Bridge page, doctors determined her situation is critical, and she’s in need of a lung bypass to help fight the infection. Her mother Dana Neel tells NBC 6 Jennings didn’t open her eyes until Sunday evening.”

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting widespread flu infection in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas. Officials said Texas is hit the hardest. Unlike other strains of the virus, H1N1 is more likely to sicken younger adults than the elderly. Health officials said this is the first time since 2009 that H1N1 is the dominant circulating flu strain early in the season. Earlier this month, two people died in Gregg County as a result of the illness.”

Gregg County is the area around Longview, Texas. I grew up about 10 miles from Longview. Go east from Longview and you come to Marshall, Texas and Tatum where the girl got it is near Marshall. That whole area is deep east Texas. My area is south east Texas.

I've got a couple of bear recipes.

But bear-fat is valuable for many things. My great grandfather swore by it for keeping his wife's skin soft. ;)

JADB said it made the best pie crust of anything but it was getting hard to come by. :)

I prefer beef tallow for pie crust.

I never did press great-granddad exactly what he used the fat for. I figure some things, the fewer details, the better. ;)

I learned about the bear grease when I asked JADB for her flaky pie crust recipe.

I just went out to my little greenhouse & picked tomatoes and peppers..It is 28 here. It was 38 in my greenhouse with the heat lamp..I wanted to pick them in case it freezes in there tonight.. I did throw a vellux blanket over the top of it earlier but I wish I would’ve had a king sized on, instead of a twin size!

Hopefully, it won’t get down to the 22 degrees that’s predicted, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it did..brrr.

I’m thinking a pot for the sprouting onion and placing it inside the house too, and just see what happens - even though we don’t really have a good spot for sunshine.

I don’t know if I would get around to planting everything I want to purchase. I’ve gone thru the Bountiful Garden catalog, and just as I finished marking the ones I want to consider, the Burpee catalog arrive and I did the same to it.

LOL! it will be a fun time going through my LOOOOOONG wish list and paring it down to essentials!

I have already bought seed so I’m afraid to look through the Bountiful Gardens and Burpee and Burgess and Terroir Seed catalogs. If we have no more room to have plants, do we just buy seed and put the envelopes around the room to look at?

What you wrote above is “gardening”. I have discovered it is never over, you just move to another part of gardening. Winter is keeping them alive and spring is hoping seed sprout, and summer is hoping they don't burn up plus canning, and fall is planting more for a fall garden, then it's winter again.

I can see why people don't do it because it takes effort and lots of people are too non-motivated to put out effort. In my case, I thought one had to have a gardening “talent” plus I didn't want to deal with dirt. After I started learning I realized it was no different than learning anything else I have learned. Just find out how it works and do that.

With your heat lamp and putting that blanket over it, I don't think it will be freezing in there. I have my plants covered tonight and had them covered last night with row cover. I have babied all those strawberry plants over and over and if they don't produce strawberries this spring, I'm checking into the mental hospital.

I intend to plant 200 this year. Because our growing season is so long, I may break that into two parts.

We had 27 predicted, but only got to 31 here, so far, it could drop one more before daylight. It’s 26 officially at the airport 4 miles from me. They are in an open area, whereas I am sheltered under a tree canopy that helps hold warmth.

It was 23 when I checked at 4:30am, but now it's warmed up to 24 in the Texas Hill Country. The thermometer that is on the wall of my greenhouse shows right at 32 degrees..brrrr... I'm ready for March...or October again.

It’s 33 at our house. I just got back from Lowes, it was sunny, no wind, just a beautiful winter day. I can take winter like that.
