Winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, arrived officially this morning about 5 minutes ago, at 9:11 PST.
The days get longer from here!
How could they possibly get any longer with the “lyin’ king” in office? LOL! Looks like we may be a little safer since he’s on vaca. Glad we could pony up the $$$ to pay for them to get some much needed rest.
Woohoo!
The good news is that the days will now start to get longer as we move to Spring!
When I lived in Alaska I always considered today as the first day of Spring. Now that I live in N. Idaho I still consider it the first day of Spring. WooHoo! C’mon back Sun.
I’ve been taking grief from in-laws ever since Grandma and I were married on this date because “only an engineer would pick the longest night of the year for a wedding.”
LOL
Grandma’s the one picked the date. I just followed orders.
Mom’s birthday.
God rest you in peace, sweetheart.
Yes, the irony always get me. Just as the 1st day of summer marks the decline of the sun. Strange.
I don’t mind cold so much, but the short days during winter drive me crazy.
Summer and spring, I can take a short nap in the afternoon, get up and still have four or five hours outside to do stuff.
But when the sun goes down at 4:30, and it’s pitch black by 5, that don’t work!
Thanks...THAT brightened up..My Day!!
:’)
Cool.
Now that that’s over with we can celebrate Christmas!!
Merry Christmas FReepers!!
First, note that the great majority of earth's habitable land, and therefore the great majority of its human population, lies north of the equator. Second, the earth's orbit, like those of all planets, is elliptical rather than circular. Third, when it's summer in the northern hemisphere the earth is at its greatest distance from the sun, and it is nearest during the northern winter.
Thus does God moderate both the summer heat and the winter cold for most humans.
I’ve always been the opposite. I love yard work, but evening is the time to sit in the yard with some booze, and watch the moon and the stars, and listen to the wind in the huge willow. Evening is heaven, and if kills me to wait until 8 or 9pm to begin the festivities. And if you don’t start boozing until 9pm, it’s tough to get up for work the next day!
Well I should think so!
Marrying your grandma is sick and twisted.

Yes, it’s very welcome when the days start getting longer again. Yesterday afternoon a bunch of snow slid off the roof into the driveway, and I was out there shoveling in the dark, before it froze again overnight.
You know it’s winter when you’re out there shoveling snow in the dark. Even if it’s not officially winter.
Start of Winter and it’s 75 here in GA.
I've always liked walking in the woods this time of year when the sun is at its lowest angle. The sun throws off a harsh light and the shadows are long - even at high noon! If I get too deep in the woods in mid afternoon, I have to rush back to my car before it gets too dark to see!
It's hard to go into the woods at the summer solstice because you will get eaten up by mosquitoes and black flies.
I do hope that more people go south of the Equator to live. If too many people live up here, the weight of them will eventually cause the earth to wobble. We need to balance things out just a little bit.
