First, note that the great majority of earth's habitable land, and therefore the great majority of its human population, lies north of the equator. Second, the earth's orbit, like those of all planets, is elliptical rather than circular. Third, when it's summer in the northern hemisphere the earth is at its greatest distance from the sun, and it is nearest during the northern winter.
Thus does God moderate both the summer heat and the winter cold for most humans.
I've always liked walking in the woods this time of year when the sun is at its lowest angle. The sun throws off a harsh light and the shadows are long - even at high noon! If I get too deep in the woods in mid afternoon, I have to rush back to my car before it gets too dark to see!
It's hard to go into the woods at the summer solstice because you will get eaten up by mosquitoes and black flies.
I do hope that more people go south of the Equator to live. If too many people live up here, the weight of them will eventually cause the earth to wobble. We need to balance things out just a little bit.
