Free Republic | 12/13/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 12/13/2013 12:25:11 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

growing is local and every piece of land/dirt is not equal.

You said it, Sista!

How To Preserve Seeds:

We are talking dry seeds. If you save your own veggie seed, preserving them starts after you get them dried and ready to store.

I read a bunch about this, most used method is put them in envelopes with names written on them, then put in glass jars and store in dry, dark place. This explains it very well:

“A closet or box in a cool basement will typically work well. You can refrigerate or freeze seeds if you wish. Freezing can increase the longevity up to ten times. Refrigeration can extend the viability up to five times longer than normal. If your seeds would normally last three or four years with proper storage, freezing or refrigeration extends this significantly.”

My seeds are already in envelopes, so after I use the seeds I want, the rest will stay in the envelopes and go into quart glass canning jars I got just to have quart jars for storing things. Two (maybe three) quart jars should hold them all if I stuff really well.

So, Silentgypsy, do that and don't worry about the seeds.

Seeds I grew under the grow lamp had not been put in a fridge or freezer before I put them under there and I had almost every seed produce a seedling.

I had a pen I ordered early this year to write on the plastic tags and the ink would spill out and get on me and it came off those tags.

Try Sharpie marker black pens. If you write it on plastic, it will last at least through one season out in the weather. The ink IS NOT water soluble, and if you want to wash it off anything, you will have to use alcohol or other solvent.

I cut up styrofoam plates to use as stakes to identify plants. (I feed my kittehs canned food on these, so there is always a supply around.)

Keep strong/bright lights on a timer inside the henhouse. Set it to shut off @ 9:00PM and on @ 6:00AM. Eggs will be able to be collected @ noon each day.

I have some very old seeds that I use every year from my freezer. In cooler less humid climates It probable doesn’t help as much as it does in the high humidity and temps that we have here or in the south. Every seed packet has way too many seeds for me, since we plant such a small plot.

YUM!! I want to just grab some of that lettuce and immerse my face in it...with lots of vinaigrette and blueberries and carrots and parsley and nuts and ....!!! It’s gorgeous!

I tried growing lettuce for the first time last summer, and was able to root a grocery store romaine stump, and it was happy for a while, but I think the heat got to it. It just wilted away. My seed sprouts never really took off. My spinach was only a strange looking stem with some little straggly leaves on it. So I admire your lettuce-growing mastery!

Isn’t that catalog wonderful!? I have not made any choices yet, but am looking forward to really studying it.

What btw, is a “ground cherry?” Just curious, is that actually a cherry or a type of tomato? (I guess that answer would be evident if I studied the catalog....) ;-D

Rightly_dividing said,”This past Monday, I felt like I was coming down with a cold, so I went out to my little Texas Prepper’s Greenhouse, snapped off a jalapeno that had turned red, and ate half of it..

I was going ooh, ow, yikers..It was hot. Later on, I ate the other half, which was full of seeds. Yes, the seeds are hotter. I drank some eggnog to cut the heat, and hoped it wouldn’t kill the effect. By the next day I was feeling a lot better, and by Wednesday, I was at 100%.

I was thinking it beat the heck out of those old turpentine mustard plasters my Grandma tried to poison all the Grandkids with back in the day.”

Not sure I have the bravery to have the pepper treatment. But if I feel like I’m going to die anyway, what the heck? ;-D

I’m very glad to know of this treatment, and if I run out of astragulus, I accept that this one will work! But oh my!

I’m chuckling at your grandmother’s treatment methods. My darlin tells the story of his grandmother’s treatments involving cow poopie in a sock! Can’t remember now what it was for...certainly not an internal treatment, but eeeeeeuuuwww!!!

“You can buy bottled jalapenos with no heat in them. Walmart has their brand and Kroger has their brand, get mine at Kroger. That’s the only jalapenos I eat and they are delicious. Eat as many as you like on whatever you’re having that goes with jalapenos. Get a bunch of tortilla chips, put Mexican blend shredded cheese on them and japapenos on top and micro for several seconds and then eat.”
~~~
I LOVE those! and I LOVE TexMex food! Grew up on it!...but I’m wondering if the de-hotted jalapenos would have the zip required to effect the cold/viral treatment which has been under discussion. If they would, then definitely I’ll fill the larder with even more of those for “medicinal purposes!”
;-D
I’m singing your chorus, greeneyes! preeeeeach on sister!!!
Love the plug-in artificial tree we obtained!
The decorations we had that year I told you about was a large Christmas tree (that the blue parakeet loved!) and Mom had some beautiful stained glass windows of a Nativity scene for our picture windows which we made out of butcher paper and crayons. We probably weren’t too obnoxious since we lived at the end of a dead end road and the only people who saw it were next door, the mailman, milkman, and people who were out Sunday driving and got lost! OH yes, and visitors, who already knew we were somewhat eccentric and marching-to-another drum kind of people.
LOL! Had to laugh at your suggestion about leaving the lights up year round! We actually have some neighbors who DO that already! I think it’s a trend! They light up the house outline for the other holidays too....Easter, July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving...etc. For Christmas they just add the yard displays. I think it is actually a very practical idea!
Please see my post 196 to greeneyes. I had not read ahead to realize you should have been included.
That hot and sour oriental broth sounds divine... would you be willing to fill us in on “some other stuff???”
I think my basil seeds that I planted last spring/summer were five years old. Some were in unopened packets, and at least one was opened. They were sitting in a pretty little stoneware flowerpot on the counter in the kitchen all of that time. I think that they were the best basil plants I’ve ever had. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who was seriously counting on old seeds for a harvest, but it does seem to indicate that seeds are hardier than we may have thought.
