Free Republic | 12/13/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 12/13/2013 12:25:11 PM PST by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Thanks, I’ll need it. The house behind ours just sold, and we have no idea what sort of people they are yet, we don’t know if they will rat us out for the hens.

I know the animal control guy for our town is a by the book ass, because I had it out with him once for harassing me over and over to license a dog who had passed away. I asked him if he wanted me to dig up her corpse and bring it to him, because if that’s what it would take I’d get to digging. I made an off hand comment about there being a lot of dog owners in my neighborhood that didn’t license their dogs, and he got all intense and asked me to “provide information” about those dogs. I blew up at him again and said something about not being a damn Nazi informant and it was not my business to inform on my neighbors.

As to naming the chickens, I TRIED not to name the roosters, but George just had one of those personalities.....

Thanks. I’ll look into that tomorrow if I live that long. FYI: i just got up at 5:30. Been under the weather all day. Have new round of drugs in bloodstream, so feeling a bit better, finally but very hoarse scratchy throat. Wife is making soup, we’ll see how that rides.

Normally I stay out of public places in flu season. I was headset on getting started with a new dr that I went to the gathering of sickies and had to wait almost 2 hours amongst them.

Oh wow! I can imagine that those could wipe out any virus! Certainly would be good for clearing out the sinuses! (Not sure I, as the patient would also survive! LOL!)

I'm so glad you brought that to my attention! I knew about the vitamin c, but just did a search and found the following. Seems you are absolutely correct in your firm believing! Looks like I need rethink my hesitance to them.

http://www.nutrition-and-you.com/jalapeno-peppers.html

Excerpt:

Capsaicin has been found to have anti-bacterial, anti-carcinogenic, analgesic, and anti-diabetic properties, at least in some early laboratory studies on experimental mammals. It also found to reduce LDL-cholesterol levels in obese individuals.

LOL! I like the speed of unfolding Christmas events you describe. I was blessed with a mom who was pretty good at not being stressed and can fondly remember the year when there was a lot going on, and we simply left our Christmas decorations up until early April!

(to the disapproving neighbors:)
Besides being busy, we LIKE our Christmas decorations....so THERE!

I deeply empathize. Hope you feel much better very soon! sockmonkey says eat hot peppers! In my post above in reply to sockmonkey, I looked up some info about peppers. Yep, if you are able to tolerate them, they will do wonders for the immune system!

Sockmonkey, is it necessary in your home remedies to eat the seeds, or can I just deseed them and struggle them down that way? The seeds are the hottest part aren’t they...and probably the most nutrient laden...?

The local feed store sells large sacks of crushed Oyster shells for laying hens to harden the shells. I buy a 50# sack every other year to deter slugs and snails from our Dahlia plants.

I love the Baker Creek catalog! I received mine too but I put in an order before I got the catalog - gotta start those tomato seeds indoors very soon!
My order arrived today - tomatoes: Black Krim, Black Cherry, Roma, a yellow cherry variety; a white eggplant; lemon cuke and I'm going to try growing some ground cherries.
I'm still in the process of weeding out which heirloom tomatoes grow best in our climate and which ones the family likes so I'm growing different varieties.

After about a week of freezing and near freezing weather, we are up to the 40s at night again. It's supposed to be in the 70s during the daytime in a couple of weeks!
I harvested some of the lettuce in my lettuce bowl today for lunch. Here it is last week before its "haircut" lettuce_bowl_fall2013 photo LettuceBowl640x437_zps7436ecb7.jpg

Thank you. I had soup and juice, another round of pills, so now I’m ready for bed again. I’m just a wuss when it comes to cold/flu stuff.

In this area, the plants are put in the ground when the mesquite trees bud. That’s what I’m going to try.

Marcella, I used to use plastic markers, but the rain and ? washed off the “permanent” in, now I use shims and the ink
soaks into the wood and lasts better than the plastic. I’m using the plastic for indoors, only.
