Once upon a time Linda Walther Tirado aka KillerMartinis wrote an essay about what it feels like to be poor. In spite (or perhaps because) of its nihilism and hopelessness, Linda’s story enchanted the internet and went viral.
Linda’s essay was hailed as brilliant, honest, brave, and shared and discussed all over Facebook, Twitter and the Huffington Post. But as anyone who knows a thing or two about poverty could tell you, Linda’s tale was pure poverty porn. Not honest or authentic at all, but designed — like all effective porn — to make its target audience feel good.
Cooking broccoli is so hard, Linda wrote.
Yes, yes, yes, responded her readers.
Planned Parenthood is three hours away and I can’t afford the gas, Linda explained.
Don’t stop, they said.
Smoking is the only thing that keeps me sane, Linda revealed .
Oh my Gawd. More, more, more, said her fans. Where can we send you money for hitting every poverty talking point there is from junk food to the Patriot Act, and all in one easy read?
Linda quickly set up a gofundme.com account. And within a few days, she had raised more than $60,000 to write a book about what it’s like to live in dire poverty and despair — and also to head to Vegas for some much needed R and R.

in reading some of the comments, i find it funny how those who were taken in by this are rushing to defend the one who conned them.
i used to be homeless. it isn’t fun, but it does tend to motivate one.

To admit what happened, would mean admitting that they were wrong.

I was going to say the same thing. You literally only have to boil water to cook broccoli. My EIGHT YEAR OLD can do it.
How dumb IS this chick?
The barrier to cooking is not intelligence,
it’s lack of “want to”.
Oh, no doubt.
It’s easier to complain about the lack of convenience foods or eating out than it is to just buy a hunk of broccoli and steam it.
My hubby makes a meal of steamed broccoli w. cheese sometimes. He loves it. He’s the one who taught me to steam it. I’d never steamed veg before, only stir fried with a bit of oil.
This type of article is easier to believe if you’ve never really been poor. Or known anyone who was.
We’ve had so much true wealth in this country for so long we’ve lost the ability to discern between truth and scam in this area.
Isn't this how Mormons react?

I worked with people who were multigenerational upper middle class. The type who had a grandmother who’d left them a couple million to be divided amongst the grandkids. Didn’t everyone have such a grandmother? It was difficult for them to believe that EVERYONE couldn’t just pay 10% more for this or that tax to save the environment, feed the homeless, or any other pet cause they happened to take up. They had ‘extra’ in their bank account, didn’t everyone?
They’d never been related to anyone poor, gone to school with anyone poor (private school), gone to church or synagogue with anyone really poor, didn’t live (of course!) in a neighborhood near anyone who was poor. Completely insulated from the poor and their real needs. Answer? Throw money at them and make them go away. Preferably YOUR money. But theirs too, they had plenty of extra if they had to spend it. Nevermind if YOU didn’t have a grandmother who left you nearly a million bucks when she passed on. MY grandmother left me some of her kitchen implements. She was a REALLY good cook. IF she’d HAD big bucks she’d have left me that too. But she didn’t. So obviously I didn’t have the same ‘extra’ money they did. And that blew their minds...
Or putting it into a microwavable bag for a few minutes.
