The OECD is out with new global rankings of how students in various countries do in reading, science, and math. Results of the full survey can be found and delved into here.
You can see below how Asian countries are obliterating everyone else in these categories.
The United States, meanwhile, ranks below the OECD average in every category. And as the WSJ notes, the US has slipped in all of the major categories in recent years:
The results from the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), which are being released on Tuesday, show that teenagers in the U.S. slipped from 25th to 31st in math since 2009; from 20th to 24th in science; and from 11th to 21st in reading, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, which gathers and analyzes the data in the U.S.

Abolish compulsory education. The assumption is flawed since a good percentage of citizens don’t value free education. The stats are public ed stats. It is impossible to make chicken salad out of chicken poop! The fix is: no high school diploma = no food stamps, no WIC, no AFDC, no Medicaid, etc.
Just damn. Blacks apparently are doing worse than Hispanics, who in my experiece living in immigrant heavy Las Vegas, often don’t even sprechen ze Engrish.
I would assign this disaster to Democrat NEA instructors.

Groups that have been told [by the left] that they are victims, especially for generations, have a tendency to perform poorly regardless of race.
But they have good self-esteem, and know how to put condoms on bananas.
One more thought: the nations ahead of us are ethnically homogeneous; do not bestow citizenship on foreigners and all speak one national language. Let’s see how those Nordic countries do after they deal with a few generations of towel heads!
RE: How reliable is the data? Can we believe that every student is counted and included in the statistics?
Notice that they are comparing SHANGHAI-CHINA ( a city ) with ALL of the United States ( Same also with Hongkong, Taipei and Macau ). How fair is that?
What about doing a study on ALL of China instead of simply selecting one city?
And notice when you take the PISA scores of Whites and Asians in the USA ( not including Blacks and Hispanics ), the USA compares quite favorably with Japan and Switzerland.
Let’s get back to the Three R’s and Rulers Across the Knuckles Plan = basics with motivation.

It’s probably impossible to clearly state the reason for the fall of the educational system in this country without getting suspended. Yeah, the system has been federalized, unionized, and taken over and ruined by Leftists. All of that pales in comparison to the impact of demographics.

Shanghai is not typical of China. I suspect there is a lot of apples/oranges in these results.

It looks like we’re well on our way to solving the so-called problem of filling jobs that Americans won’t do;We are substituting that with the problem of filling jobs that Americans CAN’T DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen some studies on that subject. Basically, the very low and very high ends tend to vote lefty. Also, the particular area of study for the higher end is very important. Obviously, sociology types tend to vote differently than MBA types.

PC, Diversity, gay rights, no gender schemes and the public schools serving as places to park kids are destroying future Americans with the bs posing as education.
Two younger relatives are examples of the dangers out there for our kids re getting a good education and being exposed to third world trash thugs in our pc and diversity driven public schools.
The boy, 12 years old now, three years ago went from above average in math to the village idiot. His parents paid to get him into Kumon after school and on Saturdays. Within 3 months, he went from Village Idiot in math to taking and acing math tests 2-3 grades over him. Since, then he has in an advance math program, the math Olympics and a couple of other extra activites with good math students.
Turned out that he had been exposed to 3 different new maths, and his last exposure was in the common core. The kid was totally confused and getting depressed until his parents got him into Kumon and the good extra math activities, after school.
I asked his sister how come she didn’t have a problem. She said that she did math like her Dad, Mom and me, the old fashioned way. She said that one year, her home room teacher, not a math major ended up teaching one of the new maths. She often went to her homeroom to study, and her teacher would be crying. She was crying because, she didn’t know how to present the new math lesson of the day. Our young female relative would coach her teacher re how to present it.
This younger female relative is in an excellent Catholic School now. Originally her reason was supposedly, the boys in her class were dorks, couldn’t dress properly, talk properly and were bullies. When we went to her mid school graduation, we saw the punks and their thug fathers dressed like thugs and behaving like thugs.
Later, that afternoon, when we were alone, I asked how these third world pced/diverse thugs treated her and her friends at school. She said it was like being in a meat market with vile mouth bully thugs. She and over a dozen of her friends, all in the honor roll group went to the private school this fall. Many of her friends are being home schooled.
Her brother, has decided he wants to go to the private boys school associated with his sister’s private school when he finishes this middle school. He is a good athlete and hangs with others like him, smart and tough.
Since my discussion with our younger female relative re the third world bully thugs in her school, rated as one of the best, I have had similar discussion with parents sending their daughters to private school here and in other cities.
All of them admit that their daughters were mistreated by the third world thugs in public school. That was a major reason to send them to private school.
The treatment of our young females in public schools by third world thugs is a disgrace and probably occurs in every state not just here in LaLa land.
