The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Lack of moisture is a key ingredient in plant damage during the winter. It is good to make sure all your plants and shrubs etc. are well watered in the late fall so that they can better withstand the cold.
Once the freezing weather is in play, it is not recommended to water them though.
Plants here have seen nothing but rain for days and days and days. There was still light rain all day today.
You know what they say: When it rains, it pours!
Well, our local lying weathermen are saying 26F here by daybreak, but it's forty degrees outside right now, at 12:30am, so I seriously doubt it will drop to 26 in the next 6 or 7 hours.
All during this cold spell, it never froze here. Supposedly Friday, we will be back to our normal winter weather. My plants are probably dead from having plankets over them for 96 hours straight because I believed the weatherman. Even when we got a few snowflakes this morning, it wasn't freezing.
Its 38 and holding here at 2:20am. We were supposed to hit 30, but I doubt it will happen. It did snow big in Huntsville, 20mi north of us. It snowed for an hour, a person told me, that was there. It is finally clear sky here with a sunny forecast for a few days to come.
My wife and I are back from the surgery center and all went according to plan with her knee surgery. Only away from the house 4 1/2 hrs. Thanks for the prayers.
rightly, at 1 am last night it was 43 here. We are only 10 or so miles from each other, so I think the difference, 5 degrees warmer at my place, is the fact my whole back area has those tall brick walls. There is no way it was going to drop from 43 to 32 freezing before morning.
I am glad the wife's surgery is over and you are back home. Be nice to the wife, okay?
Thank you for the good news on Mrs RD’s surgery . . . prayers going up for a full recovery . . . we miss you guys . . . God be with you both.
Glad to hear that all went well. Best Wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery.
We have been below freezing most of the day. The high has been 32 degrees. However, the sun is shining into the south west facing patio doors, so the heaters have been off all afternoon, and it’s quite cozy.
Had to take off my sweater for the afternoon. I am really enjoying the ambience of heat from the sun that collects through the windows onto the ceramic tile in front of the door. My peppers like the heat too!
Woe is me. I just received an email from Burpee. Free Shipping on all orders through Sunday..I bet I will do my usual buy pretty stuff, and not have room to plant it all..
but with Free Shipping, it will seem like a bargain :)

Wow, free shipping - what else do I want? I can go there and browse around and surely find something in order to get free shipping. If I keep it in the package and don’t plant it, I’ve still got it. :o)
The people who post on the gardening thread are special. We may freak out greeneyes when we get off subject, but what can she do about it? She can’t put us in our room and lock the door. :o)
Let me know what you order and I’ll go there and look around and tell you what I order if anything. Okay?
Thank you
Okay.
Thank you.
I don’t freak out easily. We never know where the thread will go and that’s part of the fun. LOL
Watch out for that Rita or whatever the name was though.
That’s why I use row covers. Some light, air , and rain gets through.
Surprisingly, when I took the plankets off today to let things get a few hours of sun, everything looked fine..Now tonight, it really is going to freeze. It's about 32F already, so it will be in the twenties by morning..Then one more night of cold temps, and we go back to our usual 50 degree night time temps..
Well, for sure, I'm going to order tycoon and lemon boy hybrid tomato seeds, and maybe one packet of the supersauce tomato seeds.
I'll probably get some toy choi, and maybe napa cabbage, and I'm not sure what else. I know what I won't be getting, and that's squash or cucumbers..I'll checkout what herbs they have...
Yes they can go quite a while without uncovering with the blanket. However, we usually have cold enough weather here that I like to just fix it and forget for about 2 months.
If we get to the teens and below zero, I’ll add straw on top. Don’t usually have to do that till the Jan/Feb time frame.
