It's the battle of the tablets. Just as Apple unveiled the ultrathin iPad Air with Retina Display, Microsoft officially released the Surface Pro 2.
Although both are excellent tablets for small businesses, each device has its own set of capabilities. Whereas the iPad Air is strictly an iOS tablet in form and function, the Surface Pro 2 is a versatile, Windows-powered hybrid machine that can be used as a tablet, laptop or desktop computer.
To help you choose which tablet is right for your business, we've compared the iPad Air and the Surface Pro 2.

Both have ‘Open Office’. And irs Free.
“Well, does Apple have an iWork for Windows?”
If you’re interested in a free alternative to Office on Windows, Libre Office gets rave reviews.
I ended up getting Office365 which I highly recommend. For $99 a year, you get to install the full Office on up to five devices, be they Mac or Windows.
We have numerous applications in our business that Apple will not/cannot run or support. No brainier.
Win8 is the crappiest platform ever devised. I’d stay away from Surface AT LEAST until Microsoft completely capitulates on that failed platform and finds a better alternative.
There are things about the IPad I don’t like. I’d prefer that the battery could be changed out and the damn thing needs a USB port. But. At least its software works.
Really? I do. I’ll agree it isn’t common but it does happen. In fact Linux is the rule in engineering environments.
Nobody cares about bloated code if the tool meets their needs. As business moves to the cloud, the need to run legacy apps (eg Office) will continue to disappear.
The Google calculator is far more convenient than trying to find a pocket calculator, even though it is vast overkill in a technical sense.
Oh the horror, the absolute horror.... How will businesses ever figure out how to load software on their iPad.... In response to this opening slam:
“iPad Air: iPads, by nature, are not business ready. Users will have to download any productivity apps they need”
Really?
What moron came up with this line of attack?
Just how hard exactlly is it to download and install an App? The customer might sprain their finger? No mention of the many Apple genius bars out there who will custom setup your iPad when purchased.
Seems like a fake complaint to me.
My older iPad can get my officemail with no issues. It opens the attached word documents and displays them without issue. Very handy for meetings in the less well setup conference rooms.
Can’t say that I have ever tried to work on the documents from the iPad. I use the workstations for that.
Await, i take that back. I used the iMoviie to edit a vendors video down to size. None of our Windows computers had video editing software on them. The iPad worked great for chopping 15 minutes of video down to the essential 1.5 minutes of actual useable/shareable content.

Yet! Linux has run on Arm based platforms for years. Ever heard of Android?
I agree the question really about the native OS that comes with each device though,
Why does it need a USB port?
I believe you can add one with the camera/etc add on. But I haven’t used those connections since I got them.
I ussually distribute text documents via PDF format. It saves a lot of issues with incompatible Windows office versions out there. We have a lot of veneravble machines out there still running .doc
Maybe I’m misspeaking but the power cord has USB functionality, or at least it does on my 1st generation. Otherwise i’d have been unable to tether to the “home” computer to activate via iTunes.
Excel with VBA can build powerful and sophisticated business applications. Do in seconds and minutes what it takes hours and days.
You don't get VBA on Apple Excel.
Android is Linux
Using Excel for powerful and sophisticated business applications? What kind of kool aid have you been drinking?
Using Excel for tiny brittle business applications that fall apart across the network, need to have their hand held and will not scale or perform under load.
Why should they change when their os is soo secure. /s
Maybe not for everybody. I will be looking for a new laptop next year, and would seriously think about a tablet instead if it had all the functionality of a laptop.
