NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I was 39 when I got up this morning. It went down to 37 about 6:30. The airport, bout 4mi from here was 31 at 6:53.

It sounds like you got your tomato thing figured out.

Have you looked at heirloom mater seeds, just in case you want to save seeds? I just bought 7 varieties. Most were heat tolerant and disease resistant that I bought. I didn’t really need more seeds, but I wanted to try some new varieties since our heirlooms did so good last year.

“Have you looked at heirloom mater seeds, just in case you want to save seeds?”

I have an unopened envelope of Mortgage Lifter and one unopened envelope of Cosmonaut Volkov, that are heirloom.

I have “Fourth Of July Hybrid”, a large cherry that will ripen in June here, not July.

I have “Better Boy Hybrid” that will ripen after the cherries, then the “Long Keeper” that will ripen after the Better Boys.

They are all indeterminate so they should all keep producing and overlap each other. They will be in containers so I can move them out of the scalding sun for part of the day. I have enough of these seeds for two years easy.

I also ordered 5 Medallion containers that are 15 inches square, and 13 inches deep. I have two that are 13 inches square and carrots are in one and turnips in the other. I'll use the 15 inch ones for root veggies. I'll get some more 13 inch ones from Home Depot for tomatoes, they are 12 inches deep as I remember.

Are there some of your heirlooms you would recommend?

I ordered a new pea, “Masterpiece Pea” developed by Burpee for this year that is ready to eat in 24 days, or at least part of it is. Greeneyes, you may want this one for something fast to eat. It has tendrils to eat that taste like Parsley. Then, you pick the peas at any time you want from just the pods or until they fully develop peas.

They grow to a height of 36 inches. Just have to see how much there is to actually eat after 24 days. Burpee says:

“Pea, Masterpiece(51920A - 1 Pkt. (200 seeds)) 51920A A triple treat sensation! Parsley-like tendrils, peas, and pod are all edible and delicious.”

IIRC, Long Keeper is an heirloom. I do have a bunch of those seeds, but ran out of space and time this year, so haven’t actually planted them yet.

Yes to store tomatoes, it is advised to rinse in cold water to clean them, let them dry, and then wrap each individually. I use newspaper, paper towels, or paper napkins. Even in the summer, I wrap them to protect from flies etc.

Those peas sound interesting. We aren’t big on peas, but I might get some to try, because I do like to put a handful into chicken or beef pot pie. One bag of frozen peas lasts me for more than a year, and maybe I would like the immature edible part. I like the short DTM.

I never believe what they say is the time to harvest, until I've grown stuff myself. Too many variables to be able to count on their number.

Spent the day with daughter and grandkids. I'm in trouble again... Something about my grandson mentioning playing the "waiting on the wimmenfolks" game. Apparently, I'm a bad influence. :)

You and I are different on peas. I bought three kinds of pea seed. None are vines. I really like the pods in stir fries. I gave up on anything “vine” on my back wall when the bean vines cooked to death in Texas sun. Bush is fine, but not vines. The only food plants I want that grow tall, are the tomatoes and the “T” Italian squash. I looked at the height of the tomatoes I ordered and they aren't going to be eight footers or more as some of you grow.

I cannot get that Citrus tree place in south Texas to respond to emails and that website that says to click to buy from them does not work, so I'm still trying to find a dwarf “Improved Meyer Lemon” Tree to buy that Texas allows to come here. It's possible Lowes in Texas will have them. I think I looked on Lowes on the net and there were none to buy yet.

My feral tobacco plant has grown visibly since I left the house this morning. It likes being indoors on the sunshelf.

Yes, you taught me that. I know now “harvest time” is approximate and “full sun” doesn’t mean cooking Texas sun all day long.

There was a fellow from Texas who commented on the “Fourth of July” hybrid tomato, and he said they ripen in Texas in June, so I believed him rather than what they named it.

Your poor grandchildren will be scarred for life by you - they will enjoy their life more, so I guess it’s okay.

I just made the “one cuppa cobbler” with blueberries. I prefer blackberries but Kroger didn’t have any blackberry pie filling. They had very few cans of pie filling, period. I recall a month or so ago, I looked at Walmart and their selection was pitiful, too. Is the country running out of fruit? I suppose I could buy them frozen and make the filling myself but that takes time to do it.

Tis the season. Everybody is buying up the fruit pie fillings for Thanksgiving. I don't know what I'm doing on Thanksgiving. I'm holding out for my daughter's inlaws inviting me over for sheep's lung soup and other Cambodian specialties.

The kids gave me their halloween pumpkin that they never got around to carving. It's not big. So I need to figure out what I'm going to do with it. It's not big enough to make a batch of beer from. I don't like pumpkin pie. I may just make a savory soup out of part of it (with chicken testes, if I'm going to the Cambodians for the holidays and have to take a dish), and donate the rest to the compost pile.

Besides the pea seed I mentioned, the other two types I got are:

Pea, Peas-in-a-Pot(63755A - 1 Pkt. (200 Seeds)) 63755A Compact variety that grows well in containers and pots. 1 $4.95

Pea, Snowbird (52597A - 1 Pkt. (225 seeds)) 52597A Very early, edible-podded, dwarf sugar pea. 1 $4.95

“I’m holding out for my daughter’s inlaws inviting me over for sheep’s lung soup and other Cambodian specialties.”

The only people who might come to my house on Thanksgiving are my sister-in-law and her husband, but I haven’t heard from them. I think they may come Christmas since they didn’t make it here last Christmas. That is good for me - I still have their gifts from last year when they didn’t come, so don’t have to buy anything this year.

Wayne, of course, is in London. He may come in January for another film the company in Florida, plus Wayne, want to make. I think a California major film company wants part of that action.

Anyway, if no one comes, it will be just another day for me. That is fine with me. I’m thinking a frozen turkey dinner and I’ll buy a pecan pie and have coffee that day with that. I don’t mind being my myself because I like my company. I also have books to read.

If I don't go anywhere, I'll freep and do my normal stuff. If the weather is nice, I'll be in the garden working. I don't actually care that much for turkey, so smoked feral pig will work for me.

Thanksgiving is from the heart. After that night bleeding out on the mountainside during the blizzard, I've never, ever felt alone. He is always with me.

But if I do go to the daughter's in-laws... I'll be able to make an ass out of myself and not stand out. Older people have it made in that culture.

“If the weather is nice, I’ll be in the garden working.”

See, I don’t have to do that since I don’t plant in dirt on the ground. I have more class than you do, so I use pretty containers, artfully arranged. What have you got - dirty dirt that gets under your fingernails unless you wear gloves, which you don’t.

“After that night bleeding out on the mountainside during the blizzard, I’ve never, ever felt alone. He is always with me.”

We are very lucky to have you alive. I’m glad I didn’t know you then, ‘cause I’d have to go to the hospital when they finally got you there and I found out about it. After all, it would cost me a tank of gas to get to the hospital and back and you’d probably want a box of chocolates or something instead of flowers.

Actually, when I left the hospital... I wanted pants. Seems like the medics removed and lost mine during the transfer because of the hypothermia and getting the wet/freezing clothes off of me.

Yep. I checked myself out of the UNM hospital in ABQ without pants. My elder daughter was with me and said I maintained my dignity. It's difficult to be dignified without pants in a setting like that, but I perservered to endure.

And you guessed right. I'm not a big fan of flowers. I always think of:

"I killed these for you and brought them to you".

"I saw these flowers and they reminded me of you... so I killed them"

"Anyway, I killed these flowers and you might want to put them in some water or something.... so they die slower..."

I just never got cut flowers as a concept.

Except when I was dating, and the formula was dead flowers=woohoo!

“And you guessed right. I’m not a big fan of flowers.”

You know, I’m not, either. I have that same thought, “These poor flowers are dying and if they hadn’t been cut off, they would still be alive.” I’ve also read they put out “stuff” in the air in a hospital room.

I’ll tell you what happened to me last night. After dark, someone started ringing my doorbell. I knew of no one who would want something from me after dark, and I have a rule not to open my door after dark, so I didn’t. They rang numerous times and my Yorkie was having a fit.

Then, my phone rang. I answered it and it was a man who lives in a townhouse with his wife, across from me. He said it was his wife at the door and they were worried about me. I went to the door and there she was. He hung up and she said her husband had not seen me in several days and they started to worry there was something wrong with me. I usually keep the metal door open during the day but hadn’t done that in the past few days so he didn’t see an open door for those days.

When I didn’t open the door, she went down to the Long’s townhouse since she is the secretary for our home owner’s assn., and got my phone number, then the husband called me.

I let her in, of course and heard this story from her and I told her I was glad they checked on me because I didn’t think anyone else in here would notice I hadn’t appeared in several days.

She said her husband had said it was going to be cold that night and he wanted to be sure I was okay.

Her husband comes out their front door and sits in a chair to smoke so I told her the next time I saw him, I’d go over and have a smoke with him. That made her happy. She said they have been checking on me since my husband died.

I was shocked they had given me any thought at all because we don’t “visit”. I didn’t even know his/her name.

I will go over the next time I see him outside since they have made the effort to see about me.

LOL! My kid makes sure that she checks on me daily during the summer and every few days during the cold season.

If I die and no-one notices, the house will be hard to sell because of the smell. We're an honest family. ;)

Actually, pea vines might work, as long as you plant them to mature in the spring before the really bad summer heat.
