Stand outside the huge gates to Doris Day’s fortress-like home in California’s beautiful Carmel Valley and you can sometimes hear the sound of the canine companions who share the Hollywood star’s life.
It’s been some years since Day, now 91 and so reclusive many may be surprised to learn she is still alive, used to steal through the streets of the nearby town of Carmel in the middle of the night on a regular basis.
Locals would watch in surprise as she rounded up stray dogs and emaciated cats, bundling them in her car to take home and look after them.
At one time she had close on 50 dogs rampaging through her house, some of them piling on to her kingsize bed to sleep at night. People would leave abandoned pets at the gates and Doris, one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history, never turned them away.
She once refused to tell a interviewer exactly how many animals lived with her — people would think her ‘wacko’, she said.
The pert, fresh-faced and fun-loving blonde won Oscars romancing Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk and for her belting rendition of the song Que Sera Sera alongside James Stewart in The Man Who Knew Too Much.
But after four tumultuous and — in some cases, violent — marriages, she long ago gave up the company of men.
She much prefers her beloved dogs, though friends say she has always lived in fear that one of them might inadvertently knock her over or even bite her, causing serious injury.

Precisely speaking, she’s more a dog lady than a cat lady though it seems she’s qualified in both categories.
If she loves animals and treats them well then she’s just fine.
Sounds more like some journalist is miffed for not getting an interview so he’s got to run her down. She’s had a belly full of that, it’s no wonder that she prefers animals they are more trustworthy.

I loved her, but tell me why many attractive, pleasant women (like my ex-wife) go nuts over abusive men . lounge lizards, and home-wreckers? I’ve never been able to find it out.
I hope you are not including yourself in that list of abuses! (Presuming that your ex-wife was crazy over you at one time.) LOL
Seriously, the blame falls on the “abuser, lounge lizard, home wrecker”. That type of animal is an expert (sociopath) at telling the vulnerable lady what she wants to hear until he has her where he wants her — committed and unable to escape. Then he changes his tune.
Why are people so ‘concerned’? She sounds like a very compassionate old lady, of whom St. Francis of Assisi would most certainly approve. Her men acted a lot worse than dogs, so who can blame her?

I’m admittedly plenty thick, but, I never knew she and The Bandit were an item. Bert and Loni were an item as far back as I can recall.
The article sure doesn’t support the title, so she retired, whats the big deal, she still answers fan letters and has friends and a life and a hobby.

There are women susceptible to flattery. There is a difference between a compliment and flattery. I’ve always had a good sense about “sweet-talkers”. They make my skin crawl.
Melcher always made sure he had a prominent credit on the films he chose for Doris...... and he also signed her for a TV show and because she had a contract and needed the money, she was forced to do it.
Doris eventually sued the lawyer's insurance company and got some $10 million of the $20 million they stole. This was in 1950 dollars.

The story gets even stranger. Mega-star Kirk Douglas called Doris years before Melcher died and told Doris to get out from under Melcher----b/c Melcher was in cahoots with a crooked lawyer who had stolen money from Douglas.
Melcher got angry when she related the call...and told Doris, Kirk was just jealous of her success.
Backing up---when Kirk married his second wife, he was a major star--but no bank statements or investment documents ever came to the house.
When Anne Douglas asked Kirk where all his assets were---he told her not to worry, he had an accountant taking care of it.
W/out Kirk's knowledge, Anne Douglas hired Price Waterhouse to find his assets........they came back and said nothing was in his name.
The accountant was in cahoots w/ the crooked lawyer and stole millions from Kirk. He got some back--but was still out a bundle.
Several other stars got rooked by these characters.

Most 91 year olds become reclusive. They lose their friends. Their health is poor. Not all...but most.
She did lots of good for animals. According to the article she was thrifty, even though she had some really bad treatment from one of her husbands. Or because of it.
Yeah, I knew my words could have been taken that way, but no, I don't think I was. Maybe I just became uninteresting or inattentive--or upset over her acts indicating other preferences. I could have understood her finding another companion that was a better human than myself. But a slithering alcoholic that was already abusive toward his wife? I guess I must have been really 4th class.
But Doris Day, the Girl Next Door? How could she not have good advice from others? I would thought her private life would have been as clean as her public image--that is, not a phony --

I agree. The article and title are based on an interview of a man who was her confidante for years and was driven out of her life for an undisclosed reason. Was he mad that she never gave him a raise and quit? Did he do something to lose her confidence and was fired? We are left to wonder, but he is pulling a Princess Diana butler trick on her.
Don’t run youorself down just because some shallow woman did not appreciate you. I’m sure that many others would. Her lack of appreciation is more a reflection of her character rather than yours.
She was leaving Hollywood---but she went to a Hollywood party and sang a song---the piano players weere noted songwriters and asked her to audition for their movie.
