The Obama Administration announced a tech surge to try and repair the busted Obamacare web site, but even bigger problems lie ahead. The next wave of woes will relate to the coverage itself, and will saddle some consumers with significant and unexpected costs.
People will undoubtedly find that subsidies that they received were miscalculated, and that they owe more money than they were told.
The current IT problems are a sideshow to these looming harms. The next wave of troubles will be hard to fix. The President will need to seek relief from Congress.

Well gee, if a private company did that sort of thing, wouldn’t they get hauled into court and accused of consumer fraud?
Tax the rich!
Reports on the 0bananaCare’s facebook page have people outraged at the costs they’re seeing so far.....

And those costs are lowballed?
LOL!
Especially if they were a smaller business.
Can you imagine what would happen to the board of directors of a private company who spent $600 million of their stockholders' money on a website that doesn't work? Yeesh!

Avner Mizrahi I just posted this on my FB page - truly frustrated and disappointed in Obamacare - coming from an initial true believer...I’m a big fan of Obamacare (or at least the idea of it), but it’s implementation really is a disaster. I wanted to go into the marketplace and see the available plans/pricing. So, I tried signing up for an account on HealthCare.gov. Impossible. Got an error that makes no sense - it tells me that two or more of the security question answers I entered were the same, which just wasn’t true. I tried this in 4 different browsers, and got the same error every time. I thought that perhaps this had something to do with my being overseas, but I searched on Google and found about 500 websites describing the same issue. (Plus, if my being overseas were the issue, you’d think the error message would be a bit more useful).
I chatted with an agent via LiveChat on the website. They told me to call the hotline (what the hell is the point of the LiveChat then?). Spoke to a worthless customer service agent. Nothing was resolved. The only thing I found out (after something like 45 min) is that I can browse through plan pricing here: https://www.healthcare.gov/shop-health-plan-information/. But 1) the table that comes up with all the plans doesn’t have much detail on the actual coverage (just on premium pricing - though I did figure out that if I search for the healthcare plan in Google I can find coverage info); 2) why isn’t that link more prominent on the website? why isn’t it advertised? Why do I need to sit on the phone for 45 minutes to find out that I need to search “socrata” in the Search box to find that link (it’s called “Shop Health Plan Information”)?; and 3) I can’t actually access the marketplace and buy a plan until this glitch is resolved - and, of course, no one knows when that will be.
This is pathetic. A real disappointment. Maybe Republicans are right - government sucks at things like this. And don’t tell me private contractors built the system, because that isn’t an excuse - the government oversaw and managed the process and is ultimately responsible.
Anybody surprised? The government has no competitors. If you don’t like doing business with the government, there is no competitor you can go to. So government has no incentive to treat you as a valued customer. Just the incentive to treat you like the worthless piece of capitalist money that it thinks you are.
Someone said, a few months ago, “If you think that Motor Vehicles is a disaster, just wait till you see 0bamacare!”
After the bankruptcy proceedings, possibly.
Yeah maybe so, but weren't there thousands and thousands of "consumer protection" laws enacted back in the '70s and '80s that were designed to protect helpless consumers from just exactly that sort of mindset? Which (we were told) was precisely the way that "big business" looked at the "little guy?"
What happened to all those laws? Did they just go away?
Does Obamacare exempt itself from consumer protection laws?
Aren't there hundreds of lawyers around the country who have devoted their whole careers to practicing "consumer law?" Where are they? Did they all drop off a cliff somewhere?
If you go to a business, and they quote you one price for an item, and then they bill you for more, you complain, and they usually fix it. If not, you go to a consumer advocate. If that doesn’t work, you sue. Meanwhile, you tell everyone you know not to do business with them.
But when it’s the government, your complaint is ignored. There are no consumer advocates. If you try to sue the government, it will cost you big bucks and you may not win. telling your friends about it won’t do any good.
And the democrats live only to expand the role of government, infiltrating it into every aspect of life.
I had some liberals jump down my throat for wanting to defund Obamacare because they both had pre-existing situations. They were so gleeful about what subsidies they could get and very self righteous about my ideology not having any room for their grandchild with a pre-existing condition. I will have no sympathy for those people if they find out they were given bogus subsidy amounts and have to pay it back.
Bait and switch!
Not a website, but the Bell Atlantic/Verizon “ExpressTrak” system comes to mind.
Once you have given your personal info to healthcare.gov they have you for life. You will never be able to opt-out and you will have no leverage to bargain with Fedzilla. They will also start sucking in your family too as identifying them will be part of the process.
There are countless services that used to be provided by State government that are now privatized because the private providers sued on the basis that government was taking away their livelihood.
One is computer usage tutorials. I called a State Agency back in the 1990s as a newbie end user and was apologetically told that they were prohibited from competing with private companies for this service. Another is Forestry Management. Our State offers a tax cut to landowners who enroll in the Managed Forests Program. Last time we had to have a plan written (15 years ago), the State Foresters did it for free. In the interim, when we requested assistance from those Foresters, they refused us on the grounds that we were interested in profiting from logging and they were mandated only to write plans. This year, when our plan came up for renewal, we had to hire a private Forester, pay the DNR *registration* fee, and the State will deign to include us in a pool for a percentage refund of the cost, with no guarantees, since the pool depends on registrations and is limited, so the more applicants, the lower the cost sharing percentage.
State government vs. Federal Government, but I still don’t understand how the Feds can just appropriate entire industries from the private sector.
