The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
I use Flickr for photo storage and they now format the HTML and I just copy their code and paste it in the reply box. I still have to use some additional html for paragraph break...
Seriously, and totally impressed with your gardening. did you make those cages?
I just now got done dealing with the squash in the fridge. It’s been there long enough it was either use it today or throw it out, and I worked too hard growing it to throw it out! Came out to almost 10 cups of puree. I made a triple batch of squash pudding, and a triple batch of cobbler. I’m all squashed out, time to crash.
My son welded up the frames and I did the wire covers. They are overkill for this use but are perfect for protecting the strawberries from critters
That looks great! So, you plant them about 6” apart in the rows?
I’m hoping mine don’t rot before they sprout.
I like those cages. They look easy to drape with plastic in the spring or fall, in case of frost, too.
Marcella,
You need some of these for squirrel control.

Y'all must be tougher than over here in Weenie County. It's 58 degrees in my house, and I'm wearing a Polar Tec jacket as I type this.
I’m coming to your house and stealing those strawberry cages. Yes, you are a master grower. Maybe I should also steal you.
“You need some of these for squirrel control.”
I’m going to steal his.
Dang, I was hoping your next project was going to be taking a welding class.
I wonder if my gusmith would make me some of those cages. I want some about 8 feet long, by 18" wide, by 15" tall.
Tubebender, what kind of pipe are the frames? Is that just hardware cloth (I think that's what they call it in TX) on those?
You asked which countries I have visited. They are Hong Kong, mainland China, Germany, Austria, Greece, England many times, France twice, Monaco twice, Italy, Hawaii twice, Canada, Mexico several times. I have glass or china or porcelain from these countries as well as tea pots or complete tea service from them.
Toilet paper is so bad overseas, I used to have a collection of toilet paper from all of them. After my first trip overseas, I always put a roll of our toilet paper in my suitcase. The worst bathroom in an airport is Athens, Greece - there were flies on the toilet seat.
The finest hotel I stayed in was Montreal, Canada. In the room there were separate bathrooms for him and her and a sit down dressing table for the woman.
I wouldnt travel to any of these countries now the world is too dangerous.
The frame is 1/2 square tubing and 1’ welded wire and They are approximately 4’ X 6’. You could use 1” electrical conduit and 1” chicken wire for squirrel proofing. The conduit comes in 10’ lengths...
Another option to ripening green tomatoes
Take 5-8 tomatoes and place in a paper grocery bag .
Place an apple in the bag , and wait 3-5 days for tomatoes to ripen with a red blush .
The ripe apple will give of small amounts of ethylene gas, which is used commercially by packing companies to ripen green tomatoes .
The longer the tomatoes remain in the paper bag, the more red blush will be added to the tomatoes. The reason for the paper bag is that the fruit/ veggies need to breathe; a plastic bag will retain moisture and cause rot .
ooh, thx for that. So, with the 10' electrical conduit, I could cut some off of it for legs, and they'd still be plenty long for my not quite 8' long rows.
I already emailed my gunsmith with the pic...but I actually could manage it myself, except for the welding part..I never graduated past a soldering iron.
Since it's in the 40's here this morning, I really should work on the door and window ends of my "gonna be a Texas Prepper's Greenhouse" project.
BTW, your flowers and yard in the background of that picture are quite beautiful.
And it used to take valium and 3 nurses to hold me down for a blood sample.Ha! I know what you mean. I now use "therapeutic" lavender essential oil either from Young Living or Rocky Mountain Oils. Works incredibly well; also use it for dental visits.
Place an apple in the bag , and wait 3-5 days for tomatoes to ripen with a red blush .Thank you for this information. We've got a few green maters on deck! We've also egged them, breaded them and fried them (1/2 inch slices) in coconut oil. Very tasty!
