Yahoo Mail users furious over..redesign..wiped away features..left..looking like a Gmail knockoff

Yahoo Mail users are furious after the company debuted a major resign of the popular email service that eliminated many features and, some claim, left it looking like a knock off of competitor Gmail.

Observers say the 'beautiful' new look of Yahoo Mail is a product of new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer - and it has backfired.

The mail service's 275million users were 'surprised' on October 8 with the redesign and tens of thousands have complained about glitches and reduced functionality. Many simply don't like the look and feel of the new product.

I really hate the redesigned Yahoo! email program. As is usual with programming changes that are arbitrarily instituted without customer/user input, they're a disaster.

The thing doesn't even properly display in my Firefox browser. I have to hover over little boxes to get a pop up that tells me what functions lie underneath. And of course they had to do away with lots of useful functions that I've come to rely on, such as the ability to edit a forwarded email. Nope, can't do that anymore, so you can forget cleaning them up before passing them on.

I don’t like it either.
I don’t want my emails looking like an instant message box.

I might not mind the changes so bad if the darn thing even worked properly in my Firefox browser. I'm seriously thinking of going back to Thunderbird mail because of this.

(Seriously, every time they 'improve' google-groups [the news-group reader] it gets worse; the last update adds a line containing just '>' between all quoted text's lines. The same seems to be true of gmail too; they had some really good features that were removed this last go-`round [select-all for items not in spam, for one].)

Microsoft and Yahoo are where I go when I wish to defecate upon the internet. My Microsoft account, which I acquired before MSFT bought the company, is overflowing with spam. It's my standard throwaway account when sites ask for a sign-in. Screw 'em all!

For all serious uses, I employ Gmail.

Without Gmail, Microsoft and Yahoo would be but pale shadows of their current inadequate selves.

Of course, if you need Snowden-level security, you should not be using any internet service. You should be using only your own stack, end-to-end encrypted. It's OK, even desirable, to use service providers. But the payloads must be utterly opaque!

The biggest mistake that any business can make, is failing to survey their public and market test before making major changes to their products or operating basis.

High tech companies are notorious for that behavior, and some have gone under for making those suicidal blunders. Unfortunately, their example doesn't stop other tech companies from following the same tried and true failure model.

And the number one rule of high tech redesign: Do not survey the public or market test major changes before rolling them out.

Makes me crazy.

Yahoo is taking feedback here, if you don't like it please let them know and maybe they will fix things. I think it is a disaster myself.

"Groups" hasn't worked properly since DejaNews owned it, way back when.

Of course, internet content production has long since outrun such quaint things as newsgroups. So, in practice, it doesn't matter. Just google for what you are looking for and take it from there, sharpening your query as results dictate.

She'd better care. Failures of this magnitude often adversely affect the stock price of large companies. Drive away enough formerly satisfied customers, and it'll eventually affect the bottom line.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't like their new piece of crap.

I use a very old machine and just loading the screen takes over twice as long as it did before.

Don't notice that on my wife's newer i7 quad core machine with Win 7 however, but it's really slow, flakey and buggy with my older one.
Oh well, time for a new machine anyway, support for Win XP is going to be ending fairly soon.

The changes at Yahoo really suck. I used to go there only for Sports and Finance.

They used to have the best Sports section on the Internet - easy to find scores and news about College Basketball and Football. Now it’s terrible. I rarely go there now.

I hate the new email look. I’m never sure the email is actually sent because when you hit the send button, the screen reappears with the message still on it - totally confusing. The inbox screen is now a dark blue which is hard on the eyes. They gave you an option of adding a light blue background and I took it - not a dark blue. Don’t know how to change it back.

That’s what the founder of lava-bit, the e/m provider for Snowden said after the feds leaned on him to either fork over the keys or shut down,,and shut down he did. He stated that knowing what he knows, never use the “normal” e-mail.

I'm using Firefox on a Windows 7 machine and the Yahoo email window is a complete dog's breakfast. Not only am I having to deal with all of the unfamiliar changes, but most of them aren't even properly displaying.

I see a lot of little boxes where visible control icons should be, but I have to hover over them to get a pop up bubble that describes what they are. It's making me nuts.

I hated the last Yahoo mail upgrade, but this one is just FUBAR. I hope the shareholders come down like a ton of bricks on the new CEO for launching this nightmare.
