Free Republic | Sept 27, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/27/2013 12:37:17 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I'm hoping for rain Saturday. I really need the rain. My barrel is almost empty.

I don't think the vine borer can get in that squash, as it should have a solid core instead of a hollow core like the crookneck.

I just had about 20 lbs of apples dumped on me. After careful consideration, I think I'm going to can some apple butter. And if it doesn't turn out, I'll make some applejack instead. ;)

I have a 30% chance for rain on Saturday and don’t really need it as it has rained every day for several days.

I did see blooms on the cherry tomato plant today but I didn’t plant that one.

Good luck for your apple butter, err, applejack.

Apple butter is the first choice. If that doesn't work out, I'll just make booze out of the mess. That I'm SURE I can do.

I should have planted half of the stalk but I only planted the root part.

Tomatoes are happy if you remove all the leaves except the top bunch, and bury them so deeply that most of the stem is underground. They will cheerfully form large root systems along the stem this way. For most other plants, this would be a death sentence.

I put down some fertilizer and layed the whole tomato plant in a deep hole, pulled the leaves first, left just the top leaves and the tomato grew and grew and grew it had the prettiest display of yellow flowers then the grasshoppers found it. overnight it was just a tall stalk with branches and nothing on them. In the spring I’m going to get some of that stuff that kills grasshoppers. I’m going to KILL those buggers.

As long as you don’t outlive your beans, you’ll be fine. I have gobs stored too, but if I am joined by kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, no way do I have room for all we will need, so I need to learn now how to do it, so I can teach them if I need to.

We got a good start with navy beans this year. Haven’t tackled pintos yet.
