Brave black labrador Jet is lavished with praise after springing into action to save her registered blind owner's one-year-old son
A guide dog saved the life of a baby by shoving the little boys pram out of the way of an out-of-control car.
Black labrador Jet sprung into action when her owner Jessica Cowley was crossing the entrance to a car park with her one-year-old, Jacob in his buggy.
A car coming out of the car park was shunted from behind and knocked Jessica over.
But clever Jet immediately pushed Jacobs pram out of the way.
Jessica, 26, who is registered blind as she has tunnel vision, said: What she did was extremely brave and I am very proud of her.
Jacob escaped with just a cut lip.
So grateful: Jet with owner Jessica Cowley and her son Jacob
Recalling the incident Jessica, married to IT analyst James, 26, said: Just after we stepped off the kerb I heard a screeching of a car and it banged into me sending me flying.
"Just before it hit me Jet pulled her harness out of my hand and actually pushed the pram out of the way.
"The pram toppled over but Jacob was out of danger.
She reacted really quickly. Jet was worried about me but once she had licked my face and checked I was conscious, she was fine.
The incident happened outside the surgery of vet Caroline Purnell, in Leigh, Greater Manchester, who rushed to help.
She said: It demonstrates exactly how important these dogs are. Jet showed no concern for her own safety.
Jessica, who was taken to hospital with extensive bruising but is recovering at home in Leigh, added: Jet is trained to help me but shes not trained to do that sort of thing.
It doesnt bear thinking about what might have happened if she hadnt have done what she did.
My ‘grand-dogs’ are black labs, one English and one American (slight difference in body type). They are both calm and resonsive, playful when it is appropriate, and very affectionte. I love ‘em.
lol Good way of putting it.:)
OMG, that dog has such a loving, expressive face.
“I’ll have steak and a muzzle-rub, please.”
Love her eyes!! Wonder if she’s trying to figure out whether or not to eat the photographer :-)
we lost our 2nd black lab mix rescue last month. her buddy, also a black lab mix rescue, died 2 years earlier and before that we had a yellow lab. all 3 were 14 or so. probaly recue another one in the spring. house seems empty even though she was ill the last 2 months.
When my youngest sister was a toddler in diapers, my mother was hanging up wet clothes on a clothes line. My sister headed for the front door and out towards a busy road. Our dog followed her out and placed her body in front of my sister forcing her yo stop.my sister got around the dog and continued but the dog grabbed her diaper around her butt and dragged her back to the house.
Good dog I said
God Bless ye, Jet
MY black Lab (Bubba) is a year and a half and he still has that ever present, shit eatin' grin that Labs have.
When my older brother was a toddler, one time the family was at the beach. At one point, while my parents’s attention was diverted, he dashed into the river. Our dog ran after him into the river, grabbed my brother’s britches with his teeth, and dragged him back onto dry ground.
I knew a young woman who was hit by a car along with her seeing eye dog. They both recovered physically but the dog was never able to be a guide dog again.
Good doggie!
He has such a sad face. Give him a big juicy steak for his brave act.
Ping
That said, I love dogs for their loyalty and their brains.
