The remains of what it is thought could be a member of early Pictish royalty have been discovered during an archaeological dig in Aberdeenshire.
The discovery at Rhynie was made by teams from the universities of Aberdeen and Chester.
The remains were found in a carefully made sandstone grave, which the experts believe suggests the person was of high status.
It is the first time remains of a body have been uncovered at the site.
Project leader Dr Gordon Noble, of the University of Aberdeen, said: "We found elements of the legs, pelvis and jaw bone which we recovered and are now analysing in the lab.
"It's extremely rare to find any human remains from this era in the north east of Scotland as the soil in this part of the world is so acidic.
"One of the graves had been carefully made from split sandstone slabs to create a cist and the stone lining and collapsed capstones helped to preserve skeletal material.
"Unlike Anglo-Saxon areas to the south, the tradition in Scotland was largely for unfurnished burial so we didn't expect to find rich grave assemblages."

Present!
Archaeology of The Northern Picts In Scotland
This is a lecture with accompanying presentation- Section 10 details the significance of Rhynie which is thought to be a sort of crossroads of Pictish culture in days of yore. Lots of other artifacts found there, including sculptures, axes, beads, pottery and the like, along with structural evidence (enclosures/palisades) of a royal stronghold in Rhynie.

The Celts are the big scarey men wearing dresses that they call kilts
The kilt is made with nothing worn underneath , so that " the breeze runs thru the trees"
Nothing makes Celts more anrgry that "a cold breeze thru the trees" ,
and add a bad whiskey,.. that makes the Celts outright crankey and pi$$ed !
They arm themselves with spears , swords and noisey and scarey instruments call "bag pipes" , in America we call them 'bad pipes'.
In American parades , we frequently put the bad pipes near the drummers so that you cant hear the screeching and sqwaking so you wont be afraid.
The Picts are the lads running away from the already drunken and pi$$ed Celts , and are rarely photogenic since they were running for their lives !
That is why there are so few pictures today of the Picts.
P.S. That is why Irish Whiskey tastes so good today .
Nobody wants a drunken Irishman who is pi$$ed , so they improved it !
There's not much they can do about the "breeze ".

You can’t Celt your friends, or Celt your nose, or Celt your friend’s nose. That’s the difference.

The Celts came by way of Ireland by way of Central & SW Europe mostly being more refined and cultured.
Now your Picts were native(ish) who favored tattoos and were rather crude, hairy, and given to belligerence. Quite reminiscent of our liberal women today.
