The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
No I have never tried doing anything with them. This year the crop is so heavy I am trying to think of a way to get rid of some)
That’s getting to be quite a list.
It all depends. Do you have plenty of bees? If not, they may need to be fertilized by hand. Sometimes just flipping them with your finger can shake them and help fertilize.
Is it very hot? Tomatoes won’t set when the temps get too high. Their is a spray that you can buy that will help them set fruit in hot weather-I don’t remember the name, but you could do a search, if that is what you think your problem is. Also, a shade from the afternoon sun can help.
Also, once you get below 50 degrees, tomatoes don’t like to grow in the 40’s, but will survive. You can help them by covering them with row covers at night, and maybe even during the day-raises the temp about 4 degrees.
For colder weather, you can make an improvised green house with plastic over pvc pipe, or some other way to keep the plastic elevated off the plants.
That’s about all I can think of for now.
Use mushroom compost for lettuce and other greens.
What you are planning on using plus your compost should be good enough, I would think- depending on quality of your compost. If you want, you could plant some rye grass or alfalfa for “green” source of nitrogen.
their=there just can’t seem to type quite right these days.
OMG!!! What a honor! Thank you Madam Marcella... You will never know what this means to me as I still consider myself a wanna be gardener at 80 years of age...
HUH? You’re a Madam? Is that legal in Texas? Who’ada thunk it?
“HUH? Youre a Madam? Is that legal in Texas? Whoada thunk it?”
Yes, the secret is out, I am a Madam - I supervise all the sex lives of the plants on my deck.
Wife just advised that one of the mater cuttings we took a few weeks ago has a bloom on it. It’s off to Lowes in the morning to get some containers for them to live in during the winter.
I think you and I keep Lowes in business.
Wow, yesterday you pinged me to post 83, and now, there are over 200 posts..Y’all sure been chatty this weekend.
My snow peas are up, ditto on the wa wa tsai, and toy choi, which I thought I planted too deep as the seeds for those two are really tiny.
Snails ate most of my alyssum, despite putting sluggo, and deadline out..Guess, they loved the little seedlings.
I am going to sluggo my entire back yard.
I see lots of dead snails, but more live ones just keep showing up. I hate snails..even the supposedly eats the other snail decolletes.
I wish I had snow peas seeds - I really like snow peas in stir-fries. I must get some for spring planting.
Do they have to have a lattice to climb or are they bush plants?
I go to Lowes about three time a week. I buy stuff for several activities; Landscape, woodworking, fix up projects and I’m always looking for discounted paints, plus, I’m a tool junkie. I know personally too many people working at Lowes.
I bought the seeds at Home Depot recently. They are Stover brand, and are displayed on their own rack. The seed packages have English & Spanish on the front. I bought Oregon sugar pod II, which is an heirloom, and Mammoth Melitng Sugar.
The plants need a trellis as they reach four to five feet high. Mine are planted along the side of my cattle panel hoop.
I also have yard long beans along part of the hoop, and even have one sure fire tomato that has grown in and out of the cattle panel for support..works better than a store bought tomato cage as it's six feet high.
When I went outside this evening to cover the Egyptian Walking Onion planter, I looked at the Sesame flowers, there are two of them in that big pot (I decided it was two instead of one with two branches). They are over three feet tall and I SEE VERY SMALL WHITE FLOWERS ABOUT TO ERUPT ON BOTH FLOWER PLANTS.
I don’t know how the flowers turn into long Sesame seed pods, but at least there are going to be flowers.
Are you going to name the seed pods? ;)
/johnny
Well, they make wren bird houses, so you could position houses around the spots where you want them to help you out, and see: If you build it the will come.LOL
“Are you going to name the seed pods? ;)”
No, because I’m sending some of the sesame seeds to you. If I named them, I couldn’t mail them away.
