WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD VOLUME 36 SEPTEMBER 6, 2013
Free Republic | 9/6/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/06/2013 11:58:59 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

You did a good deed. I look younger than many people 20 years younger than me. It’s because I started staying out of the sun around 20 years old after a bad burn.

I was only in the sun for 20 minutes swimming, got out and had a light weight long sleeve shirt on, and spf block 8 on my face and all exposed areas, and light weight long pants the rest of the time.

I sat in the shade for an hour or two. After the sun went down, and I was at home, I noticed my skin turning very red. I started using cooling aloe cream, which was all I had on hand, and every thing was closed.

The next day, I was really sick. My arms and legs were swelled like sausages, and looked like they would split and pop open. Very bad headache and nausea. Went to Doc, he said very bad sunburn blah blah blah.

That was it. No more swimming in sun for me or sitting out side in the sun. Lesson learned.

When I garden, I go out in the AM when the house blocks the sun, and stay about 15 minutes. When the sun starts going down there are several trees that provide shade, and I spend another 15 or 30 minutes. That’s it.

A couple of the gardens are next to the patio, and those I can do a little at night by porchlight.

That’s really sad. Looks kinda like mine, except mine is lots of yellow leaves, and not from temps, just the usual soil borne whatever. AAARRRGGGHHH

You can bring him here if you like. He will have plenty of friends and will be well fed.

By the way, my wife has a large jar of ground red pepper, maybe a 6oz jar. She sprinkles a liberal amount around anything the squirrels may want to dig up, like plant bulbs. The don't like heat.

“It’s because I started staying out of the sun around 20 years old after a bad burn.”

That’s what happened to me at 17. Seniors went to Galveston and I had never been there. It was cloudy and I stayed on the beach. By nighttime, my skin was burning up, hurting and I had fever. I was sick. Then I had blisters on my skin. That was it for me.

“You can bring him here if you like.”

OK, but there will likely be more than one. I am damn serious. I have loaded my pellet gun to kill him when I catch him, so you can save this killer’s life. This one just wouldn’t quit. He came back again after I quit emailing you but he stayed toward the back of the garden. I am getting rid of them all one way or another - alive or dead, I don’t care.

When I saw him in that barrel, I knew right then I was getting rid of them. I’ll never have any plants living outside with these squirrels living right there on the other side of the fence. I’ll get that trap tomorrow.

I’ve been wondering what we were going to do with all of them that are still out there.

Make pickles.

Mrs AR rarely eats them, and I can only eat so many. Besides, they are slicers, not picklers. Still made 3 quarts of sweet-hot dills from a bunch of them.

The picnic crowd chowed down on the ones we took. With First Frost only 2 weeks away, it’s no longer a problem.

I picked 68 salad cucumbers last week and gave most of them away because we no longer can. They have soft centers and might make bread & butter pickles but they are delicious peeled and sprinkled with salt and eaten right in the garden. The large ones in the sink got sliced up and fed to the deer and ravens…

6 miles is usually NOT far enough, according to tagged studies!

I didn’t find that out until after I had take one a couple of miles, and it came back withing a couple of days. Now, instead, it’s, “BANG!”

Back in the 1950s, Mom was doing breakfast dishes, and saw an onion wiggle, then disappear; then another one wiggle. The kitchen window was open, so she got her old .22 rifle, and waited. Pretty soon a gopher head pooped up, and she shot him.

NOBODY else could shoot her rifle; it had no sights! Still, she could push an empty .22 brass into a tree trunk, then back off as as far she could and still see it, then use shot after shot to drive it into the tree. Her grandfather had taught her to shoot, and he was, at one time, California state rifle champion. He also held a record for years for shooting the most 3” or 4” (forget which they used) blocks of wood out of the air in sucession withot a miss in between, with a rifle.

We are ok with a few more, but not 100’s. LOL Wife puts out 25lbs of food for birds and squirrels every week. After we got that 5” of rain Saturday, you should see the piled up empty hulls in the downhill runoff area that got trapped by grass runners. That is why they don’t bother our gardens, all the food and acorns they can eat makes them too fat to forage. The problem we have is they plant acorns every where, so we have little oaks coming up everywhere to yank up.

As I catch one, I’ll go to rightly’s house and let him have it. I’ve only been to rightly’s house once and I have to use my TomTom direction man plus printed instructions from rightly to get there as there are a number of turns in that wooded area to get to his house. After I’ve been there a few times, I’ll know which turns to take. I don’t think a squirrel will know which turns to take to get back to my garden, plus it’s more than six miles to his house. :o)
