Free Republic | 9/6/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/06/2013 11:58:59 AM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

It's hard to believe it is almost fall.

Felt like fall this Monday morning at 35 degrees...close but no cigar, Mr. Frost...all plants are fine. Summer returns on Wednesday, with temps in the low 90's. From 35 to 92 in a 54-hour period...Red Hampshire weather is whacked this year.

Wow. 35 degrees? It was 43 degrees here this morning. We’re not very far from Rhode Island.

Yeah...the ‘weatherman’ called low 40’s, and was wrong again...as usual. Wouldn’t have mattered much as I have way too many plants to cover.

Most of the banana peppers we have had come from the store. We have only grown a few in ‘12. Next year, all I’m growing will be peppers in containers. Wife will grow only maters in the ground since we have such a small garden patch, and slicing maters are our favorite crop and have never grown enough of them.

Well, I found out container gardening beats plants in the ground that are stuck there no matter what happens to them which meant death for all of mine.

Going to Lowes today to pick up 6 planting containers waiting there for me and MORE POTTING SOIL MIX.

When you go to Lowes, ask them for help in loading the soil bags into your car. They will assist you, but you must ask.

It's that time of year. It's one of the reasons I like growing plants in containers on our back deck. We have two umbrellas and the floor of the deck is eight feet off the ground, with the plants up on stands and railings. It gives us a little extra time.

At least we don't live in Alaska, where many vegetables have to be grown in greenhouses even during the summer, or shipped in at a dear price.

I have to be able to get them out of the trunk so I buy the smaller bags I can lift. After I get them home, I can put four in a rolling shopping bag of a thing and take them in and go back and get more until I have them all on the back deck under the roof.

I have fergot to mention that we have a lemon about the size of a golf ball on one of the two lemons in containers. We had other but they fell off the plants.

Big news on the health front; I was able to sleep in the bed last night for the first time in 4 1/2 weeks. It was not easy, I could breath okay, but I was awful sore all around my shoulder, armpit and lung area. I flopped around a bit trying to stay comfortable It took about two hours today to work the soreness out. Fixing to go hit the bed again. :)

Hava good 'un.

I am finding some good prices for containers right now - Lowes and Home Depot have sales on. Got great pots for cheap from Lowes yesterday and just bought on line to pick up at Home Depot tomorrow window boxes that are 7.88 inches deep and 24 inches long for $6.97 each - they have the drainer pan attached underneath. Got two and will transplant the lettuce from paper cups into these planters and put them on the deck. Two of them will hold a lot of lettuce.

Getting set up for container growing takes some money to get what is needed but once the various pots/planters and potting soil mix is bought, the cost goes way down from now on. Remember, I didn't have much in the way of pots (like none) before this started.

I’m so glad you are back in the bed. Having to sleep in a chair must have been awful and you said you didn’t sleep well in that chair. Every night should get better.

So you have some lemons. When I looked at dwarf fruit trees for containers from the Texas valley company, they ship those in November and I haven’t decided which type tree to get.

Yes, it will be cheaper next year, but you are not done with the soil. You will need to add compost and stuff to help replace the nutrients.

It’s been nippy here the last several mornings too. Not as low as your weather though.

We planted those vine peaches one year. They are a native plant that the indians used a lot. Ours were very bland, but we did find a few recipes.

They are actually a relative of cantaloupes.

The bed lasted till 1am. Not decided yet where I'm going from here. I hurt in the bed. I was sleeping the chair to breathe, breathing ok in bed now but the pain is still there around my ribs and armpit area. This is starting to drive me crazy(crazier) I don't sleep good on a normal night.

My lemons are not dwarfs, just young trees. Containers and plants are about 3ft. I killed one before we moved and kept the carcus because I refused to accept it's death(it was a gift) It grew a sucker from the root stock and has flourished since. I call that one Comeback Lemons (or Phoenix) I may keep them short since my tree climbing is not so good in my rusting away years.
