Take our 13-question quiz to test your knowledge of scientific concepts. Then see how you did in comparison with the 1,006 randomly sampled adults asked the same questions in a national poll conducted by the Pew Research Center and Smithsonian magazine.
The analysis of the findings from the poll can be found in the full report. (No peeking! If you are going to take the quiz, do it first before reading the analysis.)
Here a much harder test, which is st least at the high school level of science!
Are you scientifically literate?
Confession: I only got 46 out of 50 correct. I'm a bit weak on classical physics.

Based on their (unscientific) example, TWO-THIRDS of college grads do NOT know that Nitrogen comprises most of the air we breathe.
They should have learned that in Jr. High School Biology, heck even 4th or 5th grade!
For the record, this Liberal Arts major scored 13 out of 13, but it wasn’t a hard test.
I agree. This test is depressingly easy and the second one you mentioned was a real test. I can’t remember what I scored on it but it was certainly not a slam dunk. You have to have broad scientific knowledge for it.
I can't believe only 7% got all 13
I’m shocked at the averages. It’s a very easy quiz.
13 of 13 correct.
Rush Limbaugh coined the term “low information” individuals. With so much propaganda about global warming, politics, and science it is no wonder that this country is so dumb.
11 of 13 for me, but I sucked at science. Guess all that reading, lurking at FR, and all those Star Trek episodes I watched account for me getting that many right.
13/13 for me. Even that stupid Global Warming Question.
It's depressing, but I believe it.
It would be interesting to contrast this with a poll of knowledge about current pop culture. I'm confident that more people in America know details about the life of Miley Cyrus than they do the composition of the Earth's atmosphere.
I thought nannertechnology was banana research.
13 for 13.
Even low income, lack of family support children who don't attend school anyway.
I maxed it, but still chuckled at the question about ...most scientists regarding CO2 as the gas causing heating.
Any “scientist” that really feels that way should go back to Physics 101, have his/her grade removed, and study something more matched to their limited IQ...such as sociology.
“Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.” - Groucho Marx
13 out of 13. Ridiculously easy.
12 out of 13
In all fairness, some of these were tough. Like at the end where it asked “Are you Male / Female.” It’s only 8:00 in the morning and I haven’t yet really decided which gender I want to identify with today.
12 of 13. nitrogen question. Shameful overall though. Its shocking to see what is considered average. Btw I am not a college grad.
