I found the test absurdly easy, getting 13 out of 13 correct. Frankly, a 6th grader should do as well. On average, adults get 8 or 9 out of 13 correct, which is just...sad.

Here a much harder test, which is st least at the high school level of science!

Are you scientifically literate?

Confession: I only got 46 out of 50 correct. I'm a bit weak on classical physics.

Based on their (unscientific) example, TWO-THIRDS of college grads do NOT know that Nitrogen comprises most of the air we breathe.

They should have learned that in Jr. High School Biology, heck even 4th or 5th grade!

For the record, this Liberal Arts major scored 13 out of 13, but it wasn’t a hard test.

I agree. This test is depressingly easy and the second one you mentioned was a real test. I can’t remember what I scored on it but it was certainly not a slam dunk. You have to have broad scientific knowledge for it.

I didn't like the "most scientists" question on CO2 and global warming.

I can't believe only 7% got all 13

I’m shocked at the averages. It’s a very easy quiz.

Rush Limbaugh coined the term “low information” individuals. With so much propaganda about global warming, politics, and science it is no wonder that this country is so dumb.

11 of 13 for me, but I sucked at science. Guess all that reading, lurking at FR, and all those Star Trek episodes I watched account for me getting that many right.

I maxed it, but still chuckled at the question about ...most scientists regarding CO2 as the gas causing heating.

Any “scientist” that really feels that way should go back to Physics 101, have his/her grade removed, and study something more matched to their limited IQ...such as sociology.

In all fairness, some of these were tough. Like at the end where it asked “Are you Male / Female.” It’s only 8:00 in the morning and I haven’t yet really decided which gender I want to identify with today.

12 of 13. nitrogen question. Shameful overall though. Its shocking to see what is considered average. Btw I am not a college grad.

I agree it was ridiculously easy. However, this summer I have taught chemistry to high school students who had failed during the academic year and I can say that they would have failed this test also (at least before they got me, LOL!)

The really tough one seems to be what is the biggest component of air. Only 20% of test takers, and 31% of college grads, got that correct.

Of course I got a perfect score, they’ll have to step up the questions a bit....

How about a few bonus questions

14: Guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine are:

a. Artifical sweeteners
b. Vitamins
c. Components of DNA
d. Spices

15: The basic principles of the digital computer were invented by:

a. Bill Gates
b. Grace Hopper
c. Johnny von Neumann
d. IBM

16: The first successful nuclear reactor:

a. Was built by Madame Curie in her garden in France
b. Was built in Hanford, Idaho following the end of WWII
c. Was built under a football stadium in Chicago
d. Was developed in Nazi Germany, but never used for anything

13 out of 13 on the easy quiz.

Only 40 out of 50 on the other one.
