Brought home a new puppy yesterday; he's got Parvo

The wife and I just brought home a German Shepherd pup yesterday. He seemed "shy" but later I realized he was lethargic. He ate a bit but not like what you would expect from a two month old Shepherd.

We took him to the Vet today to have him checked out and he tested positive for Parvo. He hadn't started puking yet and they put him on IVs so with a little luck he should recover.

Our other dog is up to date on his shots and the cats are supposed to be immune. I went around and disinfected everything he touched. The vet said they have a 90% success rate so it looks good.

I contacted the family who sold us the pup. They called back and let me know the last one from the litter died.

Does anyone here have experience with Parvo?

Had a friend whose pup had Parvo. Recovered completely, lived a long and happy life. Sweet dog.

That’s terrible. The family that sold you the dog didn’t warn you?

Sick puppy ping

Sounds cruel, but take him back where you got him. Get your money back.

Now.

I would go to the family and ask for my money back. Good luck to your puppy.

A friend of mine had a similar experience and the puppy survived, growing up to be unusually large and strong.

I agree with you. The seller should have never sold the puppy without vaccination. The pup might recover but with lingering effects his entire life.

While we are currently animal free due to young kids, we did have a bullmastiff who benefitted greatly from high quality probiotics. We fed him the same ones we take and now also give our kids. My in-laws have a Boxer with GI issues due to previous owner abuse and we giver her probiotics when we dog sit. She always does much better with us due to this, but my in-laws don’t believe in witch medicine. Since most of our immune system is in our gut, would this not hold true for pups as well? Anyway, there are no side effects so what would it hurt?

Well, it sounds like the pup’s new owner will likely provide it a far better home than where it came from....

My “free” puppy cost me $1,200 because of a week spent at the vet recovering from parvo. Yes they can recover and many do. Sounds like you got the pup to the vet in time.

We saw a lot of Parvo cases at the clinic I worked at. Your yard is infected and only the sun and time will kill the virus eventually. Do not let anyone bring their pets over for a few months—even the dogs with the vaccinations will become carriers and take the virus home with them. Odoban [have seen it in Sams Club (gallon), WalMart and Ace Hardware (both quarts only in my area)] is good for the surfaces that can’t handle bleach.

You and your puppy are in my prayers. I’ve seen the weakest puppy survive and its much stronger litter-mate not make it.

Rides posted he has taken the dog to the vet and they put the puppy on IV fluids.

I have no idea, but I’m guessing the vet bills could go 4-5 hundred dollars or more.

Add that to the cost they paid - and that eqauals a rip-off.

Of course - if they’re already too emotionally attached - there is nothing they likely can do.

Wikipedia goes into good detail about it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canine_parvovirus). Highly contagious and treatment requires hospitalization. We lost our Lab last December and our Spaniel is almost 14 years old with several cardio-respiratory issues and probably at most a year left. I’d like to get a German Shepherd next and based on what I just read about the disease your puppy has contracted we’ll make sure to have him or her vaccinated for it. Good luck!

Unless you have already bonded with this dog, return him and get your money back. The vet bills can quickly add up and it's unlikely that the breeder will pick up the tab.
Parvo is spread by coming in contact with an infected dogs wastes or fluids which suggest that this breeder did not have his dogs properly vaccinated.

Don’t know about the cost but our vet was an old country boy and all he charged us for after the initial treatment was the week of kennel time. it was less than $200.
