Consumer Reports went big on the Tesla Model S today, announcing the car had scored 99/100 on its rating system the highest rating of any vehicle the magazine has ever tested. Its truly a remarkable car, an excerpt of the review concludes, although one still limited by the inherent constraint of any all-electric vehicle: a battery that can take hours to fully charge, complicating long distance travel.

I agree, and it is too bad. Back 20-30 years CR was truly a guideline for objective purchasing.
Proves that just because an organization refuses to accept advertising does not mean they don’t have an agenda
I recall that too, although it wasn’t Consumer Reports. May have been Consumer’s Union. I can’t find the story now.
Hmm...so, either it's the greatest car ever or it's completely useless to you. Not much middle ground there...
I met a kid @ the E-box stores one day that gave me the full Shaboygan as to how and why their product recommendations suffered from Cranal-Rectal-Inversion Syndrome and he made sense, and showed me.
You are not the only one to question them as a Bible like source for everything consumer based...
It's a wealthy person's toy, not transportation. For most buyers, I'll bet it's at least the third car they currently own. Consumer Reports may think it's the world's greatest toy, but it's still a toy.
Over @ BI they are having a Telgasam about the profit numbers not being bad and the stock went nuts...
* Yet Ford's P/E is no where near the market average, and they are really challenging Toyota's Hybrid Dominance...
* The Telsa is a glorified Lotus Elise with an E-Drive Train, which to me is like many women in Hollyweird, better bodies by Dow-Corning if ya get my drift.
* My auto gnome has noted those that really know their stuff laugh at this crap, and don't even get me started on the Fisker...
Consumer Reports?
A wholly owned subsidiary of the DNC.
30 years ago I had a subscription with CR that was worth every penny. Dropped it a long time ago.
The original Tesla was Lotus Elise based.
The model S (which is the subject of this article) is a completely new design done by Tesla.
My buddy’s daughter bought one, it’s impressive but way over priced. It is wicked fast, especially up to 100 mph.
The humorous part is she gets free juice at work (she’s a drug salesperson) but another guy bought a Volt and they’re squabbling over who gets the plug-in.
On a nice paved road, maybe. Get back to me when a Tesla can go here...
An All-American Non-union product that is years ahead of its nearest competitor. I agree with CR on this one.
Model S is the Model T for the coming generation of electric automobiles.
“Model S is the Model T for the coming generation of electric automobiles.”
Except the Model T cost like $400 bucks.
Doesn’t sound the same as gas engine.
Drove the Tesla and it’s a beauty but, i see it as only an around town car.
In 1925 you could buy a Model T for $260.
Of course in that year a bricklayer made $65/week.
That is, a union bricklayer in NYC. Less elswehere, no doubt.
I saw what you did there... :)
If price is your only concern, they have a $30K priced model in the works for release in 3 to 4 years. Total cost of ownership of the current Model S equals a $35K ICE automobile. So the $30K version will be like owning a $15k - $20K priced ICE auto.
Their next model (Model X - 2014 delivery) will go there.
