FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- An electronic sign out front welcomes visitors to Sunnycrest Elementary School in the Federal Way School District; what it doesn't mention is that next week is "Teacher Appreciation Week" - and that this year's effort's aren't exactly getting an A grade from parents in the neighborhood.
"Wow. You're kidding, right?" asked Karissa Edwards, as she strolled through the neighborhood with her daughter Tuesday. "That's not appropriate for school, whether it be elementary or high school - any of it."
Edwards was looking at an email sent from the school's PTA to local parents outlining next week's Teacher Appreciation Week. The theme - "Talkin' Trash" - is broken down by day, from "Muffin Top Monday," providing breakfast to school staff, to "Tempt Me Tuesday," where teachers would get 5-minute massages on their breaks.
The biggest concern among parents, however, appeared to be over another theme: "White Trash Wednesday," where barbeque would be served to staff on garbage can lids.
"It was incredibly offensive," said Chris King, father to an 8-year old at the school. "I'm mixed race. I'm half-black and half-white, and not only do I hate the term but the term doesn't have a place in elementary school."
"Absolutely it's a derogatory term," King continued, "and I don't think anybody wants to be called ('white trash.')"
The PTA president, Amy Beckner, declined to answer questions Tuesday about where the themes came from.
"I don't have anything to say," Beckner said, before closing the front door to her home.

Funny, in Federal Way I always kind of thought that every Wednesday was dedicated to White Trash...
The goal should be less oversensitivity overall ... not equality of oversensitivity across races. Liberals whine about this kind of garbage. Lets not join in.
White people shouldn’t pretend to be bothered by crap like this just because people of other races pretend to be bothered by similar crap.
Lets aim to get race-baiters to whine less instead of aiming to whine as much as them.

The image of serving food on trash can lids is offensive to me. Offensive, disgusting, stomach turning, etc.

Why is it out of line? Its a cutesy theme for the day. My kids’ school has a day where the Kindergarteners dress like old people for the 100th day of school ... sweaters, shawls, walkers, canes, white spray-painted hair. Its fun for the kids.
I’m sure the kids dress up like rednecks and wear straw hats. Sounds like a good time for schoolkid.

I do call out race-baters. Problem is ... in this case ... we’re the damn race-baiters. We’re the people acting offended, and then acting as if us being offended should matter. We’re the ones demanding political correctness. We’re the ones trying to doctor language to suit our racial oversensitivity.

I think “trash” is the correct term for all of these types. “White trash” and “black trash”, if you really want to be specific. Since they don’t like the n-word (the ONLY word, BTW, completely banished from ANY discourse, such as news or entertainment or every-day talk, it’s so apparently supremely offensive compared to anything else), trash covers it all and is accurate as well as properly offensive.
It is a double standard ... but changing everything to their standard is going the wrong way. The point is that their standard is wrong. Adopting it by demanding we be treated the wrong way too makes things worse.

What we SHOULD do with these things coming up is ask why others are so damned offended when THEY get the same stuff. Shoooot! Why can’t we laugh at ourselves some? Them, too.
