In the ‘tip of the day’ on its Earth Day website, the Environmental Protection Agency tells visitors that topping off one’s gas tank hurts the environment.

“During hot weather, don't top off your gas tank,” the tip on the home page says. “Even a small gas spill adds to air pollution and wastes fuel.” …

I do the same. I usually pay cash so I like to end the numerals on an even dollar.

For the last few years I've been buying gas at the farmers co-op because it's ethanol free. The extra cost is a wash because I get more mileage.

Unfortunately a kid in a small town I lived in did that one winter night at a service garage with a kerosene heater burning.

Luckily my primary gas cans are the old style ones. I only have two spare 5 gal cans I keep to fill up before any known sever weather situations. When I have to use them I just get a funnel.

I top off w/o spilling, and I do not add to air polution. Now, let’s consider the air polution caused by all the unnecessary flights of AFOne, and all the unnecessary flights of Moosehell and kids on their many taxpayer paid vacations. Topping off gives me an extra 15-20 miles. Newer vehicles don’t spill unless you get really stupid trying to force extra in.

Since gasoline is back over $4/gal here in the People’s Socialist RepuliK of Illinois, it’s highly unlikely I’ll be topping off my gas tank anytime soon .....
