Uncovered, the 'toxic' gene hiding in GM crops: Revelation throws new doubt over safety of foods

•EU watchdog reveals approval for GM foods fails to identify poisonous gene
•54 of the 86 GM plants approved contain the dangerous gene
•Gene found in food for farm animals producing meat, milk and eggs
•Biotech supporters argue there is no evidence that GM foods are harmful

A virus gene that could be poisonous to humans has been missed when GM food crops have been assessed for safety.

GM crops such as corn and soya, which are being grown around the world for both human and farm animal consumption, include the gene.

A new study by the EU’s official food watchdog, the European Food Safety Authority(EFSA), has revealed that the international approval process for GM crops failed to identify the gene.

Blue zones....should be studied and respected.....not targeted by a company buying up land to push unpopular GM crops. It is a small country with unique ecosystems.

Umm, those would be the farmers who propagated patented seed without payng the license fees. Yeah, Canada enforces intellectual property rights.

No, these are farmers, whose crop and seed crop was corrupted by neighboring GM farmers.

Blue zones

National Geographic and world longevity researchers identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably better.

They found five Blue Zones, places where people reach age 100 at rates up to 10 times greater than in the United States.

They did no such thing. The seed blew into their land from the neighbors and destroyed their land forever. You can’t get rid of Rape or mustard; once it grows you have it forever. Canada is a future view of America under Obummer and GMO.

You can claim whatever you want, I suppose. The fact is that over 90% of all rape seed raised in Canada is GM. The farmer who was claiming to be victimized by Monsanto turned out to have propagated GM seed without have paid a license fee and when he got caught he claimed (unsuccessfully) that it all happened by natural accident.

Sure. You still haven't explained how GM crops are going to destroy this unique ecosystem. Do they not have any agriculture in Costa Rica? If not, do they import all of their food?

....to push unpopular GM crops.

Yeah, GM crops were unpopular with some people when Norman Borlaug "pushed" them as well. Those unpopular and dangerous GM foods ended up saving a billion people from starvation. Those evil GM crops also saved the environment from the havoc wreaked upon it my antiquated agricultural methods.

Morons, illiterates, chemicalphobes, and Luddites, always fear innovation. I have no doubt that there are many such people in Costa Rica. If progress were left up to these idiots, we'd still be standing around a bonfire wondering why no one ever lives to be 30.

'A reasonable concern is that the protein produced by Gene VI might be a human toxin.

OMG! Gene VI just jumped out of the plant and is forcing a protein down this poor man's throat. That can't be healthy. Get him some raw milk, stat!

Your argument on past GMO health related threads implied we are living longer and healthier lives because of GMO.

Now you drop that stance when it is regarding going into a country with one of the lowest cancer rates highest life expectancies.

Since when are they “forbidden” from labeling GM foods? I know attempts to MANDATE that GM foods be labeled have failed - but I have yet to see anything that forbids said labeling.

ROFL! Wherever did you find that image?

Unfortunately, this depiction isn't far off from how some people view genetically modified food. Like I said about morons, illiterates, chemicalphobes, and Luddites.

You can't hear the guy, but he is screaming.

Mase is one of those “God did it wrong, but man can fix it” fools.

That's probably what you tell your doctor if he prescribes antibiotics.

Or are you a Christian Scientist?

You're still not making any sense. People around the world are living longer and healthier lives, even with the proliferation of GM foods. Maybe this poison just takes longer than other poisons.

Can you show us how seeds from Monsanto will reduce the life expectancy in Costa Rica? Can you show us how Monsanto's product will make people less happy? In most places, higher yields, less tilling, less fertilizer, less pesticide, less herbicide and less demand for water, has a positive impact on the environment. But Monsanto is going to destroy the environment because, well.....because, because they're Monsanto and Monsanto is evil dammit! That's your argument, as pathetic as it is.

Morons, illiterates, chemicalphobes, and Luddites. Whaddyagonnado?

Everything you ate today has been genetically modified in some way. Hope you can survive till tomorrow, when you will do it all over again. Good luck.

What benefit will GMO bring to a country with low cancer rate, blue zone , high level of happiness in the population and more Centenarians than most of the rest of the world

GMO is being pushed on a country that seems to be a jewel. It is the size of Kentucky.

there is no need to inject GMO other than monopoly and control...we will have to agree to disagree.

Jobs, exports, food.

I hope they don't grow seedless bananas in Costa Rica, they're genetically modified you know.

Lots of stupid people out there. Genes are always trying to steal my wallet, I wish they'd only try to force toxic proteins on me, it would be cheaper.

It is a little over 400 acres...not allowed for consumption or marketing within the country.

The country’s own top agricultural officials wrote a letter against the authorization of GM crops in their country.

They don’t mention that non-GM crops, such as grains carry a “lethal toxin” called aflatoxin. Usually it is in low enough levels that there are no serious problems but occasionally when conditions are right things get nasty, or in places where grain storage is not optimal such as in Africa. Old pancake mix can really make you sick, for example, it’s best to keep it in the fridge and use it quickly. Aflatoxin’s been a problem for centuries, and is a carcinogen that Saddam Hussein was working on, though it does not kill quickly enough to be an effective weapon in war. It is a pretty good weapon for revenge or blackmail though. Occasional outbreaks of aflatoxin in pet food, especially ground baby bird food, occur, and isn’t discovered until all your baby parrots sicken and die for no apparent reason.
