This is how things work in a free market! Love me some Zappa!

Brilliant........
Arlo Guthrie is a registered Republican, a vanishingly small breed in Beserkshire County. Hanging around with presumptuous blood sucking parasite hippies will do that to you.
Awesome ... Who knew. don’t eat the yellow snow !
The most important rule is to never let a bass player or
a drummer have any say in the band especially the song list.
“who....... could imagine......”
Who knew that the hippy Frank Zappa was an awesome freaking capitalist!
I saw Zappa play in Detroit in the early ‘80s. He was brilliant.
During the show, some clown threw a whisky bottle up on he stage. It shattered and made a big commotion and a mess. Faced the audience, put down his guitar (it was a solo show) and said “who did that?” The house lights came up, everyone around the guy pointed to him, and he was summarily escorted from the theatre.
The lights went down. Zappa sat down and continued to play. He deserved, and demanded, respect.
That’s the surest way to lose a solid foundation - to ignore the bottom...
My nickel as a bass player anyhow.
I’ve been in several bands like this and they’ve all driven me away. Funny thing is... people keep asking me to come back and play music with them after they drive me away like that.
As a player I try not to ask for too much; just that the band members put effort into the music, that the selection not be mind numbingly boring, that there’s some semblance of variety, plus some musicianship being involved in the selections sure goes a long way towards overall enjoyment of any given band situation.
“It can’t happen here.....”
Gee, how I miss Frank Zappa...
I only wish more people knew... There are many interviews with Frank regarding the Nanny State. Check out his testimony on capitol hill. Look how far we've come from Tipper Gore wanting control over what music your kids can listen to... today, everyone gets felt up at the airport, the number of bullets a magazine can have is restricted, you will be jailed for not having healthcare insurance... dare I go on? If only Frank were around today... He'd, no doubt, be a panelist on Fox News... I can picture Frank, Ted Nugent, and Kinky Friedman all being on a guest panel to discuss the debt ceiling.
Outstanding! When I was playing we practiced less and passed the savings onto the audience ;o) That’s why I actually had to go to work when I turned 18.
lol - a good bass player that can sing strong harmony can work 7 nights a week in Texas. ;o)
My first exposure to Zappa was through a roommate of mine that idolized him (and actually looked a lot like him).
The first time I heard “Crew Slut” I about fell off my chair laughing.
I think that’s true just about anywhere, but Texas would be a nice place to set up shop someday ;)
“Hey now all of you girls in these industrial towns,”
“I know you’re getting tired of all the local clowns.”
“They never show you some respect, they never treat you nice,”
“So I’m gonna give you all a little friendly advice . . .”
Here’s my nickle.
I’m in a two guitar band.
Example, the bass player and the drummer wanted to do
Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson and Surfing with the Alien
by Joe Satriani, to give the singer a couple of breaks.
After working on these songs for two weeks solid, the other
guitar player and I had it down. These are not easy songs.
Guess who hadn’t even touched these songs.
I’m just ticked at my bass player and drummer right now
but I know what your saying.
Oh yea, now that we pulled those songs off the singer wants to do Kid Ego by Extreme and A little aint enough by David Lee Roth. It never ends.
“lol - a good bass player that can sing strong harmony can work 7 nights a week in Texas. ;o)”
No kidding on that and it sure goes to their head. I’m
about to MIDI track their asses out.
Another bass player checking in (and former hobby drummer)...towards the end of his life Zappa became very into “the art of the deal” and was doing a lot of business. He also did not do drugs (or drink IIRC) and did not understand or tolerate those that did in his band. Great talent gone way too early.
