Study suggests we could refreeze Arctic. But should we?

A record loss of Arctic sea ice and faster-than-expected melting of Greenland’s ice cap made worldwide headlines in 2012, but research published in major science journals in the fall suggest warming in the North doesn’t have to continue.

We could refreeze the Arctic, proposed a paper in Nature Climate Change. It wouldn’t even cost that much, said an affiliated study in Environmental Research Letters.

The question is should we?

“In terms of pure technical capacity, any significant nation in the world could do it,” said David Keith, a Calgarian and professor of applied physics at Harvard University, one of the lead authors in both studies.

“The really hard questions here aren’t mostly technical. They’re questions about what kind of planet we want and who we are.”

That ice chest is way too close to the edge! A little glow-bull warming, and those boys could lose some valuable provisions.

We’d have to turn off the underwater volcanoes that are erupting in the Arctic first!

I suggest we keep stuffing libs and enviro wacko’s in volcanoes until they stop. If we run out- we can always try different approach. :)

On a more serious note, this idea is very dangerous and all ideas like it, tinkering with the climate of the earth in our rather limited state of actual understanding, and having no real idea what natural trends might be in play, would be inviting an irreversible disaster of some unknown type (most likely where we inadvertently create the startup conditions for a glaciation, and that would prove much more difficult to reverse). I think we should go with what nature provides and adapt as the climate changes, for whatever reasons it is changing. We are not stuck with rising sea levels in that outcome either, it might be easier to develop technology to desalinate ocean water and use it in many ways to improve economic and social conditions in the third world, if we want to get into mass engineering schemes.

I can think of an easier way. Why not dust the upper atmosphere with aluminum dust? The aluminum would come from recycled aluminum cans. The effect would reflect sunlight causing the earth to cool.

The effects of aluminum dust on the Earth’s living things might be beneficial. You never know. Perhaps humans would get smarter with a little aluminum in their bodies. They might even get smart enough to figure out a better answer to Global Warming. We could always use smarter government leaders to find ways to cool off those hot hot summers.

. . . I couldn’t resist the opportunity to end my evening with a little sarcasm.

I had a dream the other night that the global warming and cooling cycles are a function of the alignment of the earth’s magnetic core axis and the geographic axis of the earth’s crust. The dynamo effect creating the electromagnetic field and the related magnetosphere strength is greater when the axis are are greater opposition.

Right now, the magnetic north axis has accelerated its rate of travel across Canada toward Siberia. In this journey it is crossing near the geographic north pole creating a planetary axis alignment that decreases output and results in a decrease in our earth’s gravitational field and magnetosphere.

At the same time, the decrease in friction and resulting output of the dynamo created as the two axis align allows the earth to be vulnerable to solar energy ejections as the magnetosphere weakens. This creates an increase in fluctuation of climate on earth and is the reason the magnetic north pole or core axis wobbles on a daily basis, correlating to solar activity.

It was a long dream and what I shared barely scratches the surface of what I learned. I do not have a background in geophysics and found the whole vision fascinating.

What is creating all the concern is that the earth’s axis alignment is coinciding with solar max.

Thanks Daffynition.
A record loss of Arctic sea ice and faster-than-expected melting of Greenland's ice cap made worldwide headlines in 2012...
...even though it was entirely bogus.

It would be ironic that on or around the mayan date Earth has a magnetic pole shift and thus the weather patterns change, or a series of massive earthquakes that changes the axis or tilt.

Places like Alaska will suddenly see tropical weather. Maybe even tropical hurricanes.

Australia changes dramatically and the interior gets wave after wave of rainfall transforming it into a vast lush fertile land.

Another lie.

We can NOT!

Therefore, we shouldn’t spend the money pretending.

I guess that rules out THIS Obamanation.

Someone has already started saving aluminum cans for your alumi-ganza idea

That's the real head scratcher about the "faster than expected" statements I'm seeing all over the place. The most recent article on Greenland melting was a review of the Grace data that indicated it was melting far slower than had previously been estimated. Off to look or the article...

I vote yes. I would love to have 30 inches of snow in Houston for Christmas every year. And burying Chicago under a mile of ice would be .....just?

If the plan included triggering a nuclear winter by flattening Mecca, I could get on board with that.
