It’s likely just a practical matter, they didn’t have to dig that large of a hole to fit a body in that way. They didn’t have steel shovels and frozen ground can be extremely tough to dig.

Since not all of them are "sliced", my best guess is that this site was dug up before with something that would "slice"....Are all the limbs present??
