Still stuck paying $35 or more for a home phone that you can't or don't want to give up? I have a new option that could lower your cost for the same service to $15 a month!
Verizon and Straight Talk are teaming up to introduce Home Phone Connect, which promises unlimited local and long distance calling, voicemail, caller ID, three-way calling and more, all with no contract!
This home phone service does not require an Internet connection. You basically purchase a $99 wireless base station that you put wherever you happen to get a good signal in your home.
Once you purchase it, you can even port your number over from the monopoly local phone company.
Meanwhile, most people who stick with the monopoly local phone company are paying $35 or more for their service and that's not including any special features.
After having no phone service availble twice on wireless during emergencies I am going back to having a plain old everyday wired home phone.
I have MagicJack. It works, when it isn’t disconnecting itelf from the computer.
I have thought about checking NetTalk, which plugs into the router, so one does not need for the computer to be on.
I have Tracfone pay-as-you-go. I make few calls, so it costs be about $7 per month.
The Verizon-Straight Talk service sounds interesting.
Anyone use a OOMA phone?
Keep those copper wires to your house energized. The phone companies are trying to get rid of them.
...and still half your bill will be taxes.
My Ooma phone costs less than $12.00 per year tax. No issues unless cable is out. I paid for system initially but I have covered that expense. .... I had Vonage which is real good. Actually better than advertised....

PARASITES! I’m paying for your OBAMA PHONE! Oh, wait...
Obi100 at Amazon is only $40 up front and unlimited everything when combined with Google voice. No monthly fee for anything.

I use the Obi 110 with Google Voice. It will be free at least the rest of the year. I use Callcentric for the 911 service.
I’ve been thinking about Oohma(correct spelling?)- Consumer Reports gave them the best ratings by far. Is it true you can’t use a fax machine with that? The voice is supposed to be the clearest.
get the magicjack plus - no pc on all the time.
I would go with Ooma again if had to. Great company. Not familiar with recent offers. I paid about $220 for equipment about 2 years ago and get under $12.00 added to my CC each year which I expect. call me at 1 205 533 6196 and see for your self.. I am in Alabama..

Ooma is great. I paid $220 about 2 years ago and am charged a fee of under $12.00 each year. I talk with a friend in Hawaii frequently. Clear as it can be. call me in Alabama 1 205 533 6196 to or give me your number and I will call.. Vonage is ok. I was paying $12.50 per month and decided to stop that payment.. before I ported my number. Vonage voicemail transcribes messages to text and attaches it to email. Ooma charges $9.93/ month for this service.
