As a former drummer I ‘’can agree, Monitors(’’speakers’’) close by help too. I think the head-set thing came in after the first night when they were all using hand-held mikes.

You’re absolutely correct; that’s why it’s important, when using in-ear monitors or cans, to really pay attention to the volume.
Of course, being yer typical rock guitar slinger, I tend to have ‘em WAY too loud. :)

On a demo session for a local songwriter, I was there for guitar and pedal steel, and the singer from my band to do the vocal. I told the engineer, to set the mike high, like Lemmy’s, and to keep the volume in Bobby’s cans low, so that he’d sing loudly.
