Oops.
Me too! Loved that show.
I wonder if the Captain Queeg parallel was Windom’s idea?
I loved that show. It seemed like whenever I thought a program was good it got cancelled.
He probably “guest-starred” in more tv-series back in the 1960s-80s than ANY other actor. Gunsmoke, Star Trek, Twilight Zone, absolutely everything. In fact, I saw him just a few weeks ago in an episode of “The FBI,” playing a commie assassin.
His performance in “Star Trek” (The Doomsday Machine) was superb.
IIRC As originally concieved, the character of Commodore Matt Decker was to be loosely based on that of Capt. Ahab, with the planet killer in the role of Moby Dick.
William Windom made the character somewhat more tragic and sympathetic.
IMO One of the best episodes of “Star Trek”.

Yeah! I know the feeling! Had it when they cancelled “My Mother, The Car.”
He was great on Murder, She Wrote. RIP.
He was also a regular on “Murder She Wrote”.
“I remember him as the senator in The Farmers Daughter with Inger Stevens.”
I though he was Congressmen Morley on that sho!
Yes, Windom was seemingly in everything on TV. I remember him from an old Twilight Zone epidose as "the major" who found himself in a barrel with four other characters and tried to figure out how to escape.
Thurber's work reflected that uniquely off balance (best example: Jonathan Winters) Ohio sense of humor and his house in Columbus is a museum and literary gathering place. Personal connection was fellow membership (60 years removed) in the Strollers acting group on the OSU campus. Windom made something of a stage career afterwards playing Thurber in one man shows. I did not know till now that he was a paratroop infantryman with the 82nd Airborne in Europe.
I remember thinking how cool the stair lift was that Inger rode up and down the stairs in. I wanted one for my house but my mom said, “No!”

You’re absolutely right. (My memory’s obviously faulty.) But now that you mention it, I can hear Inger Steven’s voice , in here lilting Swedish accent, saying “Congressman.”
Back when Star Trek was entertaining.
RIP Mr. Windom.
I always remembered him from that show.
He was a very good actor...but I thought he was already dead! Kind of like John Astin.
“They say there’s no Devil, Jim, but there is. I’ve seen it ... straight out of Hell”
Remember that episode, Trekkers?
