Google has officially unveiled its very first own-brand tablet.

We've been hearing rumors about a Google/Asus tablet collaboration for several months now. Today, at Google I/O, the search giant confirmed its partnership with Asus and showed off the fruits of their combined labor: The Asus Nexus 7.

It has very nice specs for a sub-200 tablet, heck for any android tablet. Same guts essentially as the Transformer Prime, just downsized. I am curious how much this is being subsidized because this essentially is cutting Asus's premier tablets at the knees, and they are the manufacturer for the Nexus.

Also if the rumored specs for the Windows Surface Tablet is similar, save for the size and storage space, makes you wonder if MS will come in at a $500 price point.

I have a Transformer and could nut imagine going for a smaller tablet. The 10” screen is just about right for me.

I wonder if anyone responsible for the name thought of the Nexus 6 killer replicants from Blade Runner?

I have the Transformer Prime and a 7” Chinese Knock Off I bought online. I have a hard time choosing which one I want to take with me sometimes because the 7” size is very convenient, it weighs basically nothing, and I can type with my thumbs in landscape mode, which I find more efficient and less cumbersome. The chinese knock off specs are cheap so it comes with a terrible screen(800x600) and can overheat but it only cost $90 compared to the Transformer Prime which set me back $600. So I will probably end up getting this and if it works out give my other tablets away.

Ice cream sandwich and jelly bean? Bloomberg will ban it in NYC. Moosechelle will have a fit.

I agree. 10” is perfect.

I have the new Apple iPad (Gen 3). Had a Gen 1 (64gb ,WiFi)from when they first came out and my wife just inherited it because she got me the Genb 3 for my b-day.

The new one is just an outstanding device. Again, 64gb, Wifi with two cameras (looking both ways) at 6 Megapixels or so.

Use it all the time for surfing, research, keeping up with family, face-time/skype, the list goes on.

Amazing times we are living in.

When I first read the title I thought it said Google Confirms $199 ANUS Nexus.

Not that I would be surprised, but I was!

I have a tranformer and it’s pretty much replaced my laptop for daily use. If they put phone functions on this thing, for $200, I would use it as my phone.

Opposite experience here. I went from a 7” Galaxy tab to a 10.1” Galaxy tab. I really miss the smaller tablet, and I’m considering picking up a Kindle Fire because it’s smaller.

I would hazard to guess that how you use it is the real factor comes into play here. My 10” tablet does many things better than the smaller one, but 9/10 of my usage is reading (books), and the 7” tablet was the absolute perfect size for reading.

How’s Larry Page gonna pay his medical bills if they’re giving these away?

Wait until you get a little older, I am typing this on a 55 inch monitor and about 8 ft away, using 42 point font, and I make more typos than most. I have a 1st gen iPad that I can't use anymore, gives me a head ache to try and read most stuff on it.

Just a few years ago I was using a flip phone to browse the web, oh well life goes on, until it don't.

Precisely. For some, the smaller size is ideal, for others, a larger size is preferred. What I like about my tablet is that it has reduced wear and tear on my laptop (I use the tablet for checking e-mail, some websurfing, etc.); this way, my laptop is freed-up for more important things like writing, web design, video editing, etc.

Got a discontinued HP tablet and haven’t used it much. I thought I would use it for surfing while on the couch, but it’s too heavy, and it’s difficult to use the keyboard. I prefer my Droid.

It would have been good as a portable Netflix viewer, but there’s no app for HP. Doh!

That’s one thing android has over the ipad. It’s easy to resize the text. I haven’t figured that out on safari.

Amazing times indeed. My tablet has pretty muched replaced my handheld computer (I still use it for a portable entertainment device among other things) and it is saving wear and tear on my trusty ol’ laptop.

Same here. I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and it's just perfect for me. We live in exciting times... pretty soon these things will be so cheap that they'll almost be disposable like buying a magazine.

I have actually looked at the Galaxy for business use because of the full-size USB port. How do like the Galaxy?
