GALVESTON Police officers captured one Rottweiler and shot and killed another after repeated shocks from a stun gun proved ineffective, authorities said Thursday.
Police received a call early Wednesday about the roaming dogs and went to an alley in the 3900 block of Avenue N1/2 at 8:23 a.m. to investigate. The dogs, including one that weighed 100 pounds, had bitten two people recently, Galveston police Lt. Michael Gray said.
When the animal control officer arrived, the dogs wouldnt allow him to safely get out of the truck, so the officer shocked one with a Taser and grabbed it with a catch pole, Gray said.
Another officer walks up, and the Rottweiler comes after the officer, Gray said. The officer Tases that dog and keeps applying cycles, so the animal control officer can put the smaller dog in the back of the truck.
The 100-pound Rottweiler would become vicious as soon as the stun guns shocking cycle concluded, Gray said. The animal control officer was unable to safely control the large dog with a catch pole, and the Taser then stopped having an effect on the animal, Gray said.
One of the Taser barbs embedded into the dogs skin either came loose or the Taser cartridge malfunctioned, Gray said.
The officer attempted to switch out the cartridge, but the dog lunges at them, and the officers forced to fire with the pistol, Gray said. The dog did die on the scene.
Gray didnt immediately know Thursday afternoon whether officers had identified the owner of the dogs.
Dog bites people, goes after cops, cops shoot it to protect themselves and others. Sounds like it was reasonable this time to me.
I’m probably going to get crucified by the “all cops are evil monsters” brigade for that though.
Grayhound Martin? The Passion of St. Milk Bone.
Some people allow their dogs to roam free, off their property and out of control, I know that firsthand.
Some people abandon their pets.
Both types should pay full legal consequences for their actions, which are, in a word, despicable.
Nope, this was a “good shooting,” unlike so many others of which we hear.
I doubt that crowd will show up here and make their knee-jerk threats to kill any cops who would do this to their dog.
I could be wrong, though. Some of the remarks on these cop shoots dog threads are insane.
Me thinks you're right on this one.
That last video of the cop showing up at the wrong house and shooting the guys dog was really bad for the cop who was lying his arse off about it.
This time they had no choice.
Even a tranquilizer dart wouldn’t have taken effect fast enough to restrain the dog safely.
I hope they find the owner/s and nail them.
You spoke too soon.
I saw a really bad one on the local news last night. It seems a family had filed a non-emergency report of a crime (I don’t recall what, vandalism or something), so the next day an officer comes out to file a report. He enters the yard and is approached by two medium sized family dogs. Were not talking pitbulls here, they looked from the photos like some kind of shepard/collie mix or something. One is barking at the cop, so he is “afraid for his life” and shoots it. That seems to be the SOP these days.
I don’t have a problem with this scenario. They were working on conjunction with Animal Control and obviously went out of their way to handle the situation w/o killing the dog.
Some dogs need killing.
The owners all claimed they were "nice" dogs.
I did not call the cops. All it took was a visit from my father to talk to the owners to "straighten out things out". He did not threaten to sue, just present them with the doctor bill and a warning. My "Old Man" could be very intimidating and scary too.
2 of the dogs were owned by state cops. He did not care who he was, just control your dog and don't bite my boy again. No repeat bites from any dogs. They were leashed up and controlled after the visits.
That happened 40 years ago.
THe White House chef will be right over to take custody of the victim.
Yes, people get upset with most of the cop shoots dog stories because they are not like this one. I feel that the cops should be held to the same standard as any other citizen. If this happened I think you would have less police shoots dog stories that upset so many here. To many police get away with questionable killings and many citizens are coming to realize this. The police need to realize that with the internet and 24 hour cable news they are being watched more closely.
Good shoot, and I’m as down on cops in “cop shoots dog unjustifiably” stories as anyone.
One good shoot out of 10,000.
Nope, not the usual kind of case WE READ about, but it is not really a widespread police practice to murder dogs.
This is an example of a professional police officer/department handling aggressive dogs. Most cops are like this. The problem is when they circle the wagons around a bad cop.
