Fox News: True unemployment figure is 15.8%

On Fox. If discouraged workers* are counted, unemployment percentage is 15.8%. Further, if economy starts to look better and these discouraged workers get back into trying to find jobs, official joblessness figure will also jump.

I have been told multiple times, that the U6 (What’s at 16% now) was the formula that they used when Carter reached his 10%, and Universal Unemployment, was used during the Depression, and is over 20% now. Is that correct? Can anyone tell me definitively?

Observations from the chart. U3 (official) and U6 have kept in synch; both doubled and tapering downward.

The SGS trend however is different. It did not double and is trending upward with no end in sight. So the SGS does not as bad a hit as U3 and U6 but in another year it may.

If the “real” unemployment is +10%, then they are getting paid off well enough to avoid causing political trouble. How high does it have to go before trouble starts?

Wonder how people who just graduated from school and can’t find a job are counted? They can’t draw unemployment since they haven’t been employed yet.

Thank you for that graph. Even given the numbers hocus pocus seasonally adjusted, blah blah blah, we’re still nearing great depression levels. In fact, some part time work, is not really work at all (Say 15 hours a week or less, may not even be worth the cost of the job, without subsidies/welfare benefits, etc.)
