There is reason to believe lack of iodine causes more than thyroid problems - also there is evidence regarding breast and prostate health.

Putting fluoride in your water and swallowing fluoride from toothpaste is also a problem. The fluoride ions displace the iodine in the active thyroid hormone rendering it biologically inactive. Fluoride makes bones brittle as well.
